i have a 70 elky and the wipers dont work properly. i turn them on (low or hi) and the arms go up a few inches and go back down. it seems like the arms might be jumping on the teeth or something im not sure. the wiper arms and where the hook up is in good shape but underneath maybe??? the motor is brand new.

its the hidden setup.

Sounds to me like a screwed up set of contacts in the wiper motor. (edit: stuck in 'park')

When the wipers are switched off, there is a set of contacts that maintain a path to ground while the wipers 'park'

This sets off another reaction that actually "parks" the wipers. Actually it kinda activates a cam.

Pretty much all of these motors work the same, the hide-aways most likely just use a different cam to park them.

If it is a 'new' motor, it is most likely a rebuilt motor that has set on the shelf for quite some time and the contacts have some 'crap' on 'em.

Same thing happened to me. the vendor I bought the motor from had it shipped from the rebuilder. Wish I could remember his name. He kinda explained to me what was actually going on. He even walked me thru the fixing to get me going 'til he could get another out to me.
He sent me a new motor on the 'honor system'. He just asked me to return the first unit upon delivery of the replacement.

When I get home I will see if I still have his number somewhere.

i think i have narrowed it down to it being the switch. when i turn off it does the same thing when i turn it to low speed its on high and when i turn it to high it slows way down. i think it might be the switch.

All connections to the wiper switch are a ground of some sort.

The power feed is direct to the motor from the fusebox (key on)

Try disconnecting the wires from the switch and ground them individually.

One should be 'low'-------one should be 'hi' ----and one may be 'wash'

The GM wiper motor uses a shunt winding wound in the opposite direction to both provide slow speed and park. When the contacts in the motor go bad, you get the pulsing motion you've described. It's happened to several of my cars and always required a new wiper motor to fix it.

the motor is new and i connected all the wires but not the wiper arms and it works spins in a circle no odd noise. i connect the arms and it pluses the arms. the motor still spins all the way around but the arms pulse .

also when i turn the motor off by the switch the motor stays on.

Did you replace the ground strap? The GM wiper motor is isolated in rubber bushings and there's a separate ground strap that goes around one of the bushings.

yes the ground strap is good.
