I installed an EZ wire harness and a Painless temperature sensing harness for the fan in my 38 chevy. When i hooked up the battery the horn went off and the starter kicked in. I would love to call EZ wire and ask them but they simply suck at customer service. Never return your calls and when confronted they simply give a real vague run about answer. Anyone with idea. I am using a HEI distributor and running a 105amp alternator. I was told by EZwire to run the red alternator power wire to the alternator and also a black bypass wire from the alternator to the starter post. The Painless wire harness for the temperature sensor goes to has a wire running directly to the battery.

From the info, this is really a WAG. I think you have two separate problems. A horn ground at the steering wheel that should be "open" until pressed, and (a real guess here) a jumper from the solenoid terminal to the starter main lead, and you've either neglected to put in the necessary "Ford" style solenoid, or you've installed it either wrongly, or the solenoid is defective. Is there a chance in he11 that I'm right on either account? As noted, purely guesses.

PATM, you are amazing. I taped the ground wire on the steering wheel and amazingly when I connected the battery no horn and no starter. Could it be that little stick-en ground wire was causing all that mayhem? I felt like I was welding with my battery cable. I did notice that the headlights and the hazard lights were working. Also i keyed up the car and all of the gauges fired up. I guess that is a real good sign. However I found that my turn signals are not working. Still have not checked the fuse, it is possible I fried something trying to hook it up. My concern is that once I install the horn will my starter kick on everytime I honk?

Did your harness come with a good wiring diagram ? I bought a 20 circuit harness at a swap meet new in box but no diagram for $ 50. I went to the EZ2wire website and printed off their instructions, diagrams. and I always double check the wiring before testing my work. Smoke is expensive.

The instructions that came with this ezwire harness are a joke. They basically have no tech support to speak of. Next time around i will just use a Painless. I bought a Painless temp sensor harness and the instructions were amazing.
