im converting a 66 gmc truck to auto and my first question is what is the difference between a 700r4 and 4L60 and 4L60e. then there is quite a few wires from harnesses which i need to know the purpose and how vital they are to make the trans perform correctly. can they be bi-passed or what do i need to do ?. thank you tony

There is a lot to be learned at bowtieoverdrives.com. There is another company out there.....can't ever remember the name.....they have a TON of info....just google 700r4 and they will show up.
I don't know the difference. I wne t from a TH350 to a700R4 and it has worked out fine.

all three are the same trans with different names in different years

700r4 was the first in 82

4L60E is the new name of them since around 93

E stands for electronic control

4L60 would be non electronic control,
IE an older 700r4

Hi Tony,
The 700 is an OD trans. for light duty Non computer controlled
The L60 is like a HD version of the 700 Non computer controlled
The L60E is computer controlled, need computer for pressures & shifts.
I'm sure someone else will chime in shortly with more information for you.

they all share the same operation function in basic form,and they all have the same clutch and band the difference is the way the units are shifted
700 was re named 4l60 shifts where determined via t/v cable and governor they used computer for lock up only
in 93 4l60e was introduced using shift solenoids and pcm (computer) for up shifts
