Which wiring package to buy?
I have been thinking of rewiring my street rod with a new kit from one of the aftermarket vendors like Painless, E Z Wire, or one of the others. I'm a little conflicted about which one to purchase. I don't have any automotive electrical system background. I would like to eventually add air, pwr windows, interior cabin lights and a sound system with an amp and subwoofer. I am considering a 21 circuit package so I will have enough capacity for all the eventual accessories I want to add. The car has a '70 GM column and a chevy drivetrain. It is a 12 volt system. I don't have to have the latest and greatest, as long as it is a high quality, reliable kit.
QUESTION: Should I expect to have all the connectors, plugs, etc. included with the wiring package? Is one vendor's kit better than the others? For a rookie at this kind of thing, is this task something that can be accomplished with minimal help? ANOTHER QUESTION: Because my current wiring system is a cobbled and spliced nightmare, will that kind of situation cause the motor to run at less than peak performance? |

After I posted this question I found "The Poll". What a great idea. So far it looks like the Painless kit is the most preferred. I'll keep an eye on the poll for future responses.

Check out the poll on wiring systems under the electrical section. The most popular brands are Painless and EZ. Both of these are top notch. They come with some connectors and grommets, but depending on your application you may need to get other ones since these kits are universal.
As for as wiring causing less than peak performance, not usually. As long as the wiring for you ignition is correct and you are not overloading the wiring you have, I don't see how it would affect peformance. Poor wiring can cause blow fuses and possibly a melt down. |

Thanks for the reply. Right after I posted my Q, I saw the poll. What a great idae. Maybe more of that sort of thing can be done on other items topics.
