wiring problems on a 66 chevelle

I cant figure out the problem I having on my chevelle.
I am not getting a full charge from the battery and with everything going like it is I thought it was the alternator. I replaced that, but it didnt fix the problem. It was half way restored recently, but the old harness was not taken out when a new one was installed. Is it worth the headache of trying to run out the problem or do i just buy a new one and try running it or what?

Chances are you have something draining the battery, or something is not right with your charging system. Do you have access to a volt meter, if so you need to take a voltage reading with the engine running at high idle. The voltage should be 13.5 to 14 volts.

Why on earth was the old harness left in the car?

"Full charge" ?

What exactly do you mean not getting a "full charge"? What are the indications?

Do you see any reason why you can't rip that old harness out?

You need to finish the job and do it right. Otherwise you'll never know when the next gremlin will pop up or maybe even catch on fire.

Doc here,

Don't know about your wiring...but it sounds like a "Hack Job"...and probably a fire hazard..

You can get a New Kit From Ron Francis for between $300 and $2200 (partial or full kit) and install that after removing the old firebomb..

The reason the battery may be going dead, is the diodes may be reverse biasing just sitting over night imposing a draw on the Battery...

Test the Battery for draw by removing one of the cables, Configure your DVOM for AMPS, Highest Setting, (usually 10 amps), REMOVE or defeat all other draws (dome, glove , hood , trunk, ect..) not the measurement as you reduce the scale..This should read .3 to .8 (less than an amp) to be in spec..IF not..rebuild or replace as needed..

This , also, is not to ignore regular system maintaince..Good, tight Belts, good , tight, Clean cables, good buss ground for the alternator..
