Wiring a Tilt Mercury Switch for Trunk Light

I got a mercury switch to turn the trunk light on when the lid is raised. The only switch I could find has a 150mA rating for a 12 V system. I assume that wiring this inline with the light will burn it out immediately.

So, do I use a standard 30/40 amp relay activated by the mercury switch to send power to the trunk light?

John

The original bulb in the 6 V system has the marking "3W 6-8".

The car has been rewired for 12 V. What watt replacement bulb should I use in the 12 V system?

Doc here,

!2 Volts at 3 watts..

To run it direct a max you can only run a 1.8 watt lamp or less (unless I slipped a digit in math..)That probably wouldn't be very bright at all..

So yeah, You need to cruise the local Radio Shack for a 12 volt relay with a coil draw of 150 Ma or less (or a higher amp Merc switch) and wire it for lamp operation.

wire one Fused wire from 12 Volts to one side of the Coil.

Wire another 12 volts fused wire to the Normally open contact, (Don't use the coil wire).

Then wire the other side of the coil to the merc switch and it to ground.

That should make it work.

Doc

The Center wiper will be the lamp .

i really like mercury lights they are ligke magic. but i do the relay trick and i found it annoying because i got all my relays under the dash and everytime i accelerate hard the relay starts acting up sounds when i press the pedal in the 1-2 gear change when i stop .. it's getting annoying as i say. if you get the ones that already got mercury on them as redmustang says you'll eliminate the relay and the annoying sound of the relay

Doc here,

CXPCMAN,

I think your talking about Mercury Vapor Lamps..If I read your post correctly..

He is talking about Mercury Switches..To control a relay to drive an Incandescent lamp.

But your post poses an Interesting Problem specific to Mercury Switches..Is the jarring movement of the switch under hard accelleration/Decel..This Would/Could Cause the relay to false Trigger unexpectedly, making all kinds of Annoying "Clicks" on the relay..

The light would be non~problematic, as it would only be on/off rapidly, and never seen in the trunk..but in a quiet vehicle the stuttering of the relay could drive you crazy..

I wonder if he took that into consideration?

Thanks for the Idea "Spark" !

Doc
