If he didn't rake the undercarriage on anything solid and bend linkage it may just have some mud or gravel jammed in it. Is it an auto or manual? Will the shifter not move to reverse or does it just not move when put in reverse?

You need Crosley

Things I mentioned were seat of the pants easy to check ideas.

Hopefully, Crosley will spot your post, he's definitely the trans guru and the go to guy.

brother had a '90 Ranger that he took off roading, after that it would not go in reverse afterwards, shifted the gears fine, but just revved up in reverse, it's 4wd right? the A4LD 4x4 trans isn't very good, smell the fluid and go from there, might need a new trans, or a rebuild.

A4ld?

A4LD?
I have an '87 Aerostar with that POS!
The sprag [OD?] and hub was chewed up resulting in no reverse sometimes and no drive in the OD position.
I hAd to replace the sprag, hub [including planetary gearset, and outer hub] which cost me about $250 from a *discount* trans store in my area.
I have the rebuild manual and supplement.
The first sentence in the manual says, "Since it's introduction in 1985, almost every part of the transmission has been redesigned. "
I BELIEVE IT!

what is the history on the trans?

4.0 v-6 engine?

original trans?

A rebuild at some point?

Mileage?

common reverse failure on the tranny is rubber seal gets hard and no longer holds pressure.

I had the same problem in a car of mine once.. when i shifted in reverse it would actually go forward.. come to find out i had bent a pin that holds the shifter linkage to the tranny... did it when trying to burn out by throwing it in drive(stupid).
