Looking at the cam F-bird recommended. I have a TH700R4 with a lock up. Yeah, it's a pricey converter. I will keep the 650 but go dual plane. The weiand you mentioned, is Summit brands the same? The stage 3 sounds nice.

The cam was unknown to me until I pulled it to check the numbers stamped on it. It's a crane grind sold under the summit name. 234 .488 intake 244 .510 exhaust with 114 lobe separation.

This cam needs a 3500 stall. Typically a 245MM converter size for a th700r4.

Some of the factory th700r4 converters are very low stall and real tight at idle.
The .467" lift cam may even have a problem if used with a very low stall.

The factory 12" S-10 or the Corvette L98/Iroc converters have the highest stall of the OEM th700r4 converters (2200stall)

You had best determine which converter you got ther before swapping cams.

Stall test it. ( with traction.) Look on the converter for the 4 digit code.
Google it

These trannys suck anyway. If you want to run a highperf motor that is cammed get a th350 and a 10" converter for it.

You can check the function of the PCV valve also. It has two distinct flow modes. High and low.
It should be low at idle. If it is shifting to its high flow position at idle when in gear, when vacuum is lowest,
this will upset the idle.

Hold the PCV in your hand and watch the pindle valve action while idling in neutral and then while idling in gear.
If it moves to open-high flow mode while idling in gear you got the wrong PCV valve for that cam.
The PCV valve is not closed at idle. But the pindle inside should stay in the idle low flow position at idle.
Lower than stock manifold vacuum at idle confuses its function.

Something to check. may need a different PCV valve that will stay closed (low flow-idle mode) in gear.

similar with the carb power valve. It should also stay closed at idle, in gear.. usually with that 234-244 488-510 cam a 4.5" power valve is good. Don;t buy less than a 3500 stall converter for that cam.

The summit th700r4 converters are just tweeked stock GM converters. Not what you want for this cam.
You need a smaller diameter true high stall converter for this. (245MM)
You get what you pay for.

I suspect that your stock converter is a very low stall type, intended for a very low rpm mild TBI engine. Much less than 2200 stall..
The 4 digit converter code and or a max stall test will tell the tale.
This is a very expensive and problematic transmission for a hot rod car.
Good real deal true high stall converters are not cheap for this trans.

That's exactly what I'm finding out about this trans. Thought about the TH350 swap. The converter now has a 6 stamped on it. When I looked that up awhile ago, I believe it's 1600 stall if I remember right. The pcv valve will be checked too. Thanks for all the help again.

Yes the summit brand is basically the same intake as the weiand. My dad got a summit one for his ford 302 and it was a nice intake. Go with it if you want. I did not realize you had a 700r4 and there converter's are a lot more then a 350 turbo which is why I ditched my 700r4 I had plus 350 turbo's are cheaper to build and can handle more then a 700r4 with out making modification's to it.
