Post Won't idle, Slow acceleration

It all started when I removed the rusted out catalytic converter on my 85 Camino.
After that it had really slow acceleration (sometimes but not always) up to 2000 rpm and there was like a hump it could barely get over at 1500. I figured it was a EGR pipe that i hadn't reconnected in the exhaust but after connecting it nothing changed.

Now today I was coming to a stop and it stalled and now it won't idle. You can still drive it just have to always have a lil throttle. It is also backfiring out the exhaust if you slow down with the trannie (th350) in first gear.

So won't idle, really slow acceleration, and backfiring (i think this has always done it but not positive).

Are they related?

Is it the EGR?

Should I remove the EGR and if so do I need anything other than a block off plate and some vacuum blockers?
