Wool/Foam and all the different brands of compounds - What's good? My head's spinnin

I've read so much about different pads from Lake Country, 3M, Presta, etc etc.

I currently use a wool from O'reilly's and a 3M Black foam. I use Menzerna Medium Cut on the wool and 3M hand glaze on the foam.

It works but I'm not happy with how much residue I have when done. I'd like it to be cleaner. The other problem is that if I don't use enough compound the heat will melt the black foam right into my finish (lacquer). So I have to use a lot to get the speed I need. The problem is, after I'm done I have a scratch free finish but lots of cloudy residue.

Not sure what to do but I'm ready to start trying new products. I don't have a huge budget so I'm asking to see what works.

Thanks for your opinions!

When I was working at the body shop before my current employer (Uncle Sam) we used nothing but 3M products. Pads, compound, swirl mark remover. They all work great. Mirror perfect finish everytime. Also a big part of your finish is the amount and quality of wet sanding you do.
