Working Body Filler

My Dad owned a body shop for 35 years, my brother took it over when my dad retired and sold it about 10 years ago. I grew up working in the shop and did body work until 1986. I learned to grind down to meatal, apply body filler, file, block w/40 grit paper, feather edge back ground paint edge, prime with lacquer primer, reblock with 100 grit, reprime, block w/ 220 grit, reprime, scuff with 320 grit, seal and paint with straight enamel or acrylic enamel. Old School huh.....
I am helping my neighbor with a 1966 Mustang coupe. We are replacing most all the panel,(fenders, quarter panels, doors, hood) Only original parts will be deck lid, top and rocker panels. Stripping those to bare metal. Rocker panels have some body damage. One crease I had to drill, and jerk. Ok, do I apply epoxy primer over drilled and jerked area before applying filler, or filler over bare metal and then prime with epoxy? Block the epoxy w/ 100grit and reapply epoxy or use a filler primer? Any help would be appreciated, Yhanks, Joe

First of all Joe, if you drilled holes in the metal to pull the dented area straighter, weld up the holes, grind down your weld, rough up the area that will take primer and filler. Apply your Epoxy primer, allow it to set up (according to the tech sheets on the Epoxy your using), apply your filler and level/shape. If you have bare metal after blocking your filler, reapply Epoxy primer, allow it to flash and then you could go to a high build Primer.

Hope this helps.

Ray

You are working some serious old school ways. Here is a "Basics of Basics" on plastic filler, check it out. (click here)
