Hey guys, I'm a novice and could use some advice. I've got a 69' sbc 350 - 300 horse Corvette. I've got an Edelbrock Performer intake, 600 Q-jet with Hooker Headers. I would like to up the horse power by changing heads. Should I look for stock 350 HP heads, go aftermarket and exactly what spec's do I need for a little more excitement.

What is the maximum amount of money you have to spend on a set of assembeled heads?

If your engine is the factory engine and has the original heads it should have 041 castings or 186 or the like, these heads will easily make your 50 extra horses goal with some bowl porting and a cam swap from the factory cam. The heads that came on the higher horsepower factory small blocks are the same heads, they only had bigger valves. check the casting numbers on your heads and go from there. If your still running a points ignition, dump it and get a pertronix conversion unit, tune it up with the best components you can buy, spiral core plug wires and etc. If your still running the factory cam you`ll see a nice power gain by swapping to a more modern computer designed cam, the old cams are stone age by comparision. You can call the cam company of your choice, tell them your engine, your car, and your mods, and they`ll recommend the right cam for you. You already have a good platform, you just need to add the right components to make it come to life.

I would go Edelbrock or better yet for a few more bucks AFR.

i have a set of 487x heads untouched unmolested completely stock still
very good shape,
i have no use for them, they need a good new home, are complete and on running driving engine, no issues at all with them, clean and paint them and run them, threy are off a 71 nova original and are dated such

if youre on budget then good hi perf stock castings would be the way to go, they are around and theres a few good castings like these that are good flowing,

i run 493's right now, also off a 71 car and dated same, with my 272/282 cam, untouched ones too

breathes great at high RPM, surprised me, but you gotta rally get up into the powerband to see how well it does,


the 487x would breathe better than the 493 im sure,
but i dont feel like swapping,
not right now
