"X" Heads

I'm pocket porting A set of 339 heads. They've been through a machine shop & one of them didn't make it through the crack check.
One of the heads is 339
The other head is a 339X

I noticed when mildly porting the intake around the guide boss on the common wall that the "X" head had more space between the guide boss & the port wall.

So what's the deal with X heads? Do they make more HP? If they do How much over the regular non-x issue heads?

On some heads the "X" means 10cc larger intake runners. I read this part on the forum = Others "X" ment larger combustion chamber & larger intake runners.

Looks like the larger intake runners apply in this instance.
Haven't looked real close @ the combustion chambers yet.
Only did port work on the intake bowls last night.
Almost done on all 8
Next, I'll need to read up a little on the exhaust before heading in with the carbide.
I sure don't want to remove anything that wont matter.

I always heard that the X heads (powerpack era) were eXperimental early production heads before the final design was settled on.
