Y-Block

Hi to all, looking to see if anyone knows of a manufacture who makes motor mounts for putting a Y-Block in a flathead car. I have a 1950 Ford Coupe that I want to put a 312 in. Im hoping to find a front mount conversion. The 312 I have is set up in my 64 Ford truck the block it self is actually a 57 312. I spoke to Gearheads on the phone. They told me it is best to use a truck motor because of the oil pan and front mount. I guess I lucked out there. I would like to find a front mount that uses the original flathead mounting pads on the frame. That way I could get away from using the truck bell housing mounts. I am looking for some advise from anybody who's done this or knows about it. Thanks

Gearheads offers a kit. They didn't say anything about it to you when you spoke to them?

The Following Motor Mounts Conversions are now available:

1954-1964 Ford Y-block motor into 1949-1953 Ford Cars.

This item sells for $150.00.

With the use of the truck front engine cover (272/292), it will be a front mount design. I would think this is how their system works. Let me (us) know what you find out. It will be similiar to the way FORD sat the engine in the 55/57 BIRD.

BTW- Are you aware of all the new Y-BLOCK eye-candies?

We just finished replacing the rear main seal in the 312 in our 56 Bird. We used a late model style seal vice the old rope seal that has a tendency to leak and that is being kind. Be sure you do the same to your motor before installing.

Having put a 302 into a 51 Ford, I can see where the 312 would go in very easily. If you can't find the kit Kultulz referenced, fabricating the mounts should not be too difficult with welding skills. Of course looking at an installation in a bird or the old truck would make the job a lot easier.

Y Block in a 50

gearheds bracket mounted to the side of the blok requiring some fabrication to the frame, they think going with the truck mounting compnents would be a better altrnitive to there mounts that weld in. I have no fear of welding. I just want the best configuration,

I think I would follow their advice. Not many say do something differently rather than buy their product.

If you have any torsional twist problems, look at the 55/57 BIRD side mounts. They are used to stabilize the engine.

I wish I had a flat scanner as I have a 57 FORD/BIRD and several early FORD TRUCK Shop Manuals that show the installation.

Maybe also consider a PST reinforced trans. mount to help control torsional movement and they also have a safety strap if the insulator breaks. The BIRD side mounts are actually akin to a rod between upper and lower isolators that will prevent the engine from twisting. Grade 8 capscrews on the bellhousing mount and Loctite to keep them from backing out as this mount method puts a lot of stress on the bellhousing and engine mount pad.

If you think you could use the illustrations, I guess I can have them scanned for you. Make fabricating a little easier for you I would think.

I'll do it for you. No problem. I got to thinking as I signed off last night that this mounting stlye was popular with medium truck (even after the Y-BLOCK) and the flywheel housing having two mounts to stabilize the torsional movement of the engine. The BIRD side kits will be perfect (similar to sway bar end kits) to control the movement.

As soon as I can get to Kinkos (or wherever) I will have these pages scanned and hopefully post them here so that the next guy that wants to go this way will have the illustrations. Don't forget to photograph progress as you go. I am deeply interested in this. And THANX for keeping it all FORD...

Y-Block

Hey thanks, I will look forward to that. They are drywalling my garage at the moment. It should be all finished in about two weeks or so. That is when I plan to pull it in and get started. It will sure be nice having a heated garage to work in.

I had the illustration(s) copied today. My daughter is going to scan them at work tomorrow and E-Mail them to me. I hope to have them up tomorrow.

They (4) will be of the 55/57 BIRD installation. I think you will like them...
