re: yenko chevrolets

Have you guys seen what Berger did for the 4th gen Camaro? The stage 3 had an aluminum 427 with 600 hp and was emissions legal with a full warranty. They also made a stage 1 and stage 2 that made 400 and 500 hp respectively. I've seen a couple of the stage 3 cars running around from time to time, I think they only made 20-30 of them though.

I bet some of you don't know this one which Chevy car did Yenko race in scca racing to compete with the japans car in the 80's ??

Give up Chevy Citation X-11
and there is a history site do a google search and a club on yahoo call chevycitationforevery check them out. All so you may not no the Fiero and the Citation shear a lot of the same parts. Check them out a fun little car,

re: yenko chevrolets

I had a dream the other night some old man gave me the keys to his 69 yenko camaro. It had nice power... I woke up feeling pissed off that it was a dream but also gratified that I got to drive a yenko for a few hours! Does that answer your question?

re: yenko chevrolets

A high school buddy of mine's older brother bought a 69 Yenko new. (correct, older with a better job than we had, he had just returned from VietNam with a pocket full of money) It was scary fast, but he totalled it within a year. After a couple of months in his back yard, it went to Roth Steel's shredder with under 15K on the odometer.

I bought a 67 Chevelle SS396 for $3000 and ordered it just the way I wanted it. The Yenko's were about 6k or so. That put them in the rich guy bracket. We had a couple come into the hotrod shop I worked in a few times but I think both of them were wrecked as were a lot of others. They really didn't handle that well even with the heavy duty suspension and brakes. Many blew up motors and were replaced with SBC and even PG of the day. Many were rusted and faded and repainted and simply disapeared. These didn't have 7 year rust out like now. 3 years in Minnesota winter and you had holes in them even with the best of care. They were real street racer however. I saw the remains of one last year that still had the original trim when the guy found it. He didn't know at the time what it was. It had a blown up SBC and PG in it and was in pretty rough shape. He sanded off the trim and didn't take pictures and tubbed it and added a big roll bar and a BBC with an electric od. Goes like crazy but seems like a waste. He might have restored it but not with matching numbers. Each to their own.

You could get some pretty hot stuff back then if you knew about them. I think most of these type of factory hotrods were bought by a little older guys that had better incomes as most of us kids were fresh out of school and really didn't have the best jobs. It was actually hard to build a faster car than these as there just wasn't as many motor choices as there is now and the technology had not been developed. I think 450 hp was about as high as they got. Aluminum heads were very rare and even a good porting job was very expensive and of questionable value as there weren't many places that could flow test either. We had one ofthe first BBC crate motors in 66 in our dragster. It was hard to work with as the race stuff was just being developed and we were the test beds. there weren't Merlin blocks so blocks split regularly and bearings went out for no good reason even with constant checking. In the end these were era cars as were a lot of the factory hot rods. They were pretty much gone with the gas crunch in the early 70's. I wouldn't pay 1/2 mill for one today that's for sure even if I had it to burn.

Hey bentwings,

Thanks for the history lesson. It's nice to hear from someone that was actually there and lived through an era that is so hyped up today. I was around, but just starting to use the grown up toilet by then.

Don't know how you liked your Chevelle, but that's always been one of my personal favorites.

re: yenko chevrolets

Okay TRUE yenkos were only Novas and Camaros, No vettes. Nothing just Novas and Camaros, A yenko had a big brute 350! punched out to a 396, You ****ing *******'s need to get it straight, Yenkos had a crate tranny, 9 inch rear with 7.37 ratios, you need to under stand this.... a quote from Don yenko......
"The 1972 Yenko Nova and SS Nova was a car described by Don Yenko in one of his last interviews as "A beast, almost lethal, a car that they should not have produced; as they were skirting the edge of product liability when they built this car".
I also found, something about only 37 TRUE yenko novas ever made and Only now 7 are known to exist and only 1500 clones were made and only 700 are known to exist, its crazy,A guy on Barrett Jackson had a TRUE 72 YENKO NOVA. #1 of #37, and it had the ORAGINAL 396 MATCHING NUMBERS, and went for I think it was 3.6 millon, so you guys need to study your cars a tad bit more before you go around saying bull****.

Thanks

Nice reply 72'syc. Very mature of you to word it the way you did.

-Sarcasm End-

I have had a steel replica model of a yellow baldwin motion chevelle on a shelf since I was probably 9. I loved every type of chevelle, but that one even more so.

re: yenko chevrolets

Hey '72, here's a tip... Before you start testing the profanity filter and insulting longstanding members in a year old thread, I'd personally suggest trying to contribute knowledge in more respectful ways. As it stands to be read by probably 90% of the readers who are here to learn from those who are wiser than themselves (myself included), you just came across as an arrogant know-it-all with a massive chip on his shoulder. Not to mention that a lack of respect just makes you yourself look uneducated and unwilling to learn. Bottom line, show respect, and you gain respect. It's that simple.

In a while, Chet.

re: yenko chevrolets

I was looking thru this earlier (no reply as I had nothing nice to say) and I DO NOT recall seeing anything about a Yenko Vette
(I thought those were Motion/Baldwin creations)
(have not re-read thread yet)
Nevertheless----Absolutely no way of knowing what any dealer was doing in their spare time----All we can even think about is>>What went to market.

How many Hemi Darts???---what else were the Mopar people doing on the side
Thunderbolts??---I would not even be surprized if a Merc dealer did their own for sale to the general public and did not publicize.

To be so ARROGANT on an old post is just (favorite 4-letter word)ing assinine

I'm kinda curious to learn more about this:

And this:

Every bit of information I found says they came with 4.10 gears, at least the Camaros anyway. I don't know what size tire those came with and what the max engine RPM was but using a 7.37 gear and assuming a 6500rpm engine speed and a 28" tire you're looking at about 75mph max speed at WOT. Why would somebody buy as 450hp muscle car so they could be limited to a 75 mph top speed? Sounds like a bunch of bunk to me... Using a 4.10 gear would put top speed a bit over 130. Which is more in line with the information I found that said the cars came with 140mph speedos...

re: yenko chevrolets

Just forthe record,
Here is a little cut from Muscle cars calandar...
Quote:
"For 1969, which would prove to be his most productive year, Don went all out. Besides his already successful Yenko Camaro, Don saw the need to offer a 427 Chevelle and a 427 Nova. As with the '67 and '68 Yenkos, the engine of choice was the L-72, 427cid, 435hp Vette engine. But even Don could not get Chevrolet to put a 427 into the lightweight Nova. This had to be done at the Yenko dealership.

The 1969 Yenko Chevelle came equipped much like the Camaro, using COPO 9562 and COPO 9737. Colors included Garnet Red, Butternut Yellow, Lemans Blue, Dover White, Daytona Yellow, Fathom Green, Hugger Orange and Olympic Gold, and you could opt for a vinyl top here too, available in several different colors. It is thought that less then 100 "Yenko Chevelle's" were produced, making it more rare than the famed '69 Yenko Camaro". unquote.

I don't remember the rear end gearing but 4.10 was not uncommon. I wouldn't doubt they came with at least 4.10. I had the option when I ordered mine but I chose 3.73. A friend had 4.10's in his SS Chevelle. Most racers used 4.56 or 4.88. As far as I know all had 12 bolts as mine did. The Muncie 4 spd was pretty common and even the "rock crusher" was around. I think it was over the counter however.

There were other dealers who did some of this too but none as popular as Yenko. He sold his stuff like the grand master of car salesmen. Flashy adds, pictures of local heros, burnouts, you name it.

As for old times,
I was fortunate enough to live close to Minn Dragways in Minnesota. We ran there regularly for a long time and held a number of records. This place attracted almost as many cars as national events every Sunday. John Foster ran this track with an iron hand and made this one of the best tracks in the nation.

oopps off track.
I really didn't want to respond but you know how a dog is...throw the ball and they chase it...don't know why but it seems like a good thing to do.

Just saw a Yenko clone 69 Chevelle SS for sale 65,000

re: yenko chevrolets

So funny, I have a Hotrod magazine showing Yenko's shop with a wide range of car he hopped up for sale. So that a false's statement that he only did two types of cars. He played with a lot of different car. The Citation X-11 was no exception. He race Scca in 1982.

So got the Magazine to prove it so there. HEHEHE!
