re: yenko chevrolets

Here is the picture of the "Cheetha" known as the Wasaw Warrior. Take a look at how my buddy was jambed in there.

According to the Cheetha web site it had a SBC originally. It also had side exhaust. I don't remember the side exhaust. Come to think of it I think I made the blower headers. FC style. This picture would have been as a gasser as there aren't the FC headers that were on the alcohol version.

The chassis was a ladder style whether this was the road race style or not I don't know. It did have ladder bars as they were the style back then. When it got a hold of the ground it did get rolling pretty quick as it was pretty light. The car was very flashy with everything chromed and polished. pretty first class all around.

enjoy the old days

re: yenko chevrolets

bentwings, That is so cool. You guys had one back in the day.
I hope your friend is doing ok. I know that is a hard thing to go through. My uncle had one a few years back and now he talks with slurred speech and the left side of his face has no feeling.

I have read different things on a few sites and know one seems to know the exact number of cars. A few sites state 16 and it goes ur to 28. I read one site and they said that 2 had aluminum bodies 22 were fiberglass and 4 were the drag models.
I find it so cool to read about things like this. It makes you think that there still could be some rare cars out there that people don't even know what they have.
Here is some pictures of one of the drag cars I found on the site that said there are 4.

Thanks for posting your picture bentwings. I love to see old photos of drag cars.
Wish I lived closer. I would buy you a beer or coffee and you could tell me some stories.

re: yenko chevrolets

I'll really get off track here and post our last Funny car. This was probably at Union Grove Wisc. I know for fact that there was only one of these as I built it and drove it. I didn't own it however. Tom Frazier owned it, Ed Raba was Crew chief, I drove and built the motors, and Steve Ernster took care of the body when it needed work. We had a heck of a crew and were very successful on the circuit. We didn't race the points meets or national meets as they were money losers. Our goal from the start was to make enough to pay for the car and expenses. That we did quite well. We didn't get to really run on good tracks very often so number performance isn't what was really available. We got down the track every run as well as the tracks permitted and a lot of guys beat themselves trying to get around us. We were kinda the masters of the junk track and slippery launch pads. We did run 4.50 and 155 1/8 mile a couple places which was very good in the day. This was a time of 6.80 national 1/4 record. and ran 7.0/7.10 198 on occasion at good 1/4 tracks.

So much for blowing my horn.

Anybody got anything on the Boss 429 Ford Mustang 68,69 or thereabouts.??? One came in the shop owned by a guy that had a body shop. I cussed that car for many days. It was the most difficult car I ever worked on. No flat rate either so I was stuck at hourly rate. Lost my shirt every time it came in. No matter what you did it leaked every fluid in the car. It had the most misserable headers known to man. At least the heads were aluminum. There was nothing on this car. Paper thin rubber mats, no insulation, cheapo bucket seats, no heater, no radio, no PS, no back seat. It even had a sticker saying to the effect that it was a race car and could not be licensed. Course the body guy just used dealer plates. haha It really wasn't a very quick or fast car either. Any good 440 Road Runner could run over it.

Who would have thought a troll would revive an old thread and lead into some interesting discussions? Good stuff bentwings.

I co-worker and her husband restored a 70 Boss 429 about 15 years ago. They recently sold it to a museum. With the money they got from the car they were able to buy a new Ford GT and a new Shelby GT500. They also have a 70 Boss 302. They had the 429 and 302 at a car show in town a couple years ago and both are immaculate. Very neat.

A guy near me was top wrench at one of the local Ford garages back in the day. He bought a new 427 dual quad '67 Fairlane and a new Boss 429 Mustang. To the best of my knowledge he still has them tucked away in a climate controlled building next to his house. I have only seen the Fairlane a few times from a distance when I was lucky enough to pass by when he had it out washing it and saw the Boss only once many years ago but I am friends with his cousin whos has seen them up close and he said the Fairlane only has a very few thousand miles on it as he did drive it some when it was new and raced it a couple times. The Boss has zilch for miles and both cars are in pristine condition. Call me crazy but the Fairlane would be my pick of the two. There were several '66/'67 390 GT and GTA's around when I was a pup and a friend of the family had a '66 Cyclone GT 427 convertible until his 16 year old son put it on it's side. I was 15 at the time. If I was going to have an old Ford that would be the one I'd want.

re: yenko chevrolets

I have to agree on the Fairlane choice. These were Fords answer to the GM stuff. What were these called??? nickname. Heck I can't remember. These were at the front of the superstock wars. ah Thunderbolts.?? With round teardrop hood scoop.

The Boss 429 would make a nice retirement fund. hahah

The Thunderbolts were mostly 64's, 57 of them as I recall but they also built four or five 65's, bet most people don't know that! Not sure what the production numbers were on the '66/'67 427 dual quad cars but it was pretty low. IIRC someone here told me they weren't GT's either but regular Fairlane 500's.

He told someone once that those were his retirement but he retired years ago and as far as I know still has them. Maybe I'll swing by and give his cousin a visit and see if he knows for sure. Maybe he get me in to see them close up and personal!

Pat Austin (Top Alcohol Funny Car driver) of Tacoma has a 57 Ford in his showroom with a SOHC 427 under the hood that somebody had swapped in some time ago.

Last time I was at the Imperial Palace in Vegas, they had on display a
67 Fairlaine 500 -- 427 dual quad---had something like 2600mi on it.
No GT markings or nothin'

re: yenko chevrolets

I think you are right about them being all Fairlane 500. They were the cheap body nothing in them as they were race cars from the factory. I don't know anybody that had a real one but in our travels we saw them run a number of places.

I think HRM did an article on them back then.

From what I recall you could get a standard single 4 Bbl. 427 with the GT package but not the 2 X 4 side oilers, those were plain old Fairlane 500's. You could throw a set of 289 badges on one and reek some havoc down at the local drive in!

I had to assume at the time that the car was sent to Shelby painted by Ford, and then he removed (or there were none to begin with) fenders and such and replaced them with his lacquer painted fiberglass componants!

I believe that is what they did. Back in the day I had a couple friends that had them, and my godfather worked at Dearborn Assembly as chassis superintendent... I think I remember one or another of them talking about that.
