I work at a parts store and we have recieved a ton of literature on Z-max, that oil additive with linkite, the molecules smaller then normal oil. It says it soaks into the metal rather then just riding the surface. The literature and history of the company look reputable. Has anyone actually used the stuff? It seems to be a good product seeing that it is the only oil additive approved by the FAA for use in piston engine aircraft, and many race teams use it. What do you all think?

Slick 50 was also certified by the FAA and look at what happened to them. Getting certied just means that it won't cause problems, not that it really matters.
Chlorine atoms are smaller than petroleum atoms also, should you put bleach in your engine? Go ahead and use the additive but I wouldn't expect miracles, shouldn't hurt anything. |

Marvel Mystery Oil is the only one that I can recommend. Works in gas and oil. We had a LARGE reply the last time on this subject a few months ago.

Back in the days of gassers and fuelies, everyone used low ash oils, like Castrol,Pennzoil, etc. Refining technology has given us far better engine oils than were available in the past.
So, what i'd like to know is; Who's lube do you trust to slide in and out of your sweet baby's cavities and orifices, at lightning speed, with razor sharp metals hammering wildly, at over 400*F?? And why?? |

Be careful what you wish for
I had a 92 Honda Civic that I decided needed the Z-Max treatment.
After adding it to my car, I would say that in 2-3 weeks the additive worked wonders. Completely stripped my engine of whatever was holding it together and I had to take my car out back and shoot it. |

Read what this member said above and he is dead-on. I asked a neighbor of mine that worked in the oil refinery labs abought oil additives and his answer was Never add anything to your oil Period. But advertising will sooner or latter get to you and you will buy the useless crap. The best scam on additives is the stuff that guarantees that your car will pass the polluting test. I asked the service manager if this stuff actually worked he laughed he said best scam going, around 90% of the cars pass the test anyway so if you add this crap nothing changes and yes they will be happy to return your money because only 10% will make the claim. They say so what we have the other 90% of the sales. Scam scam only you loose |

re: z-max additive
Christopher406,
There are only a handful of oil refineries that make premium base oils for all the major brands - Pennsoil, Conoco, Sunoco, Valvoline, Havoline, Castrol, Mobile. etc. Most of the best stuff is synthetic and refined using a technology call hydrocracking. This does nothing more than ultra refines the oil into a synthetic substance that has more desirable oil qualities. The major brands have their own special add package that sets theirs apart from the others that is added to the base oil produced by another refinery. Ya sure.......(mostly detergents, anti-foaming agents, etc. all about the same package)..........what it comes down to is this.... use a premium oil from one of the major brands and you will have millions and millions of $$$$ of research and development at your oil funnel. The snake oil salesmen have some wanna be chemist / petroleum engineer that concocted some crap in his garage and then they come up with a flashy ad and marketing campaign that airs on the crappiest stations late at night where they can afford to run their infomercials. Sure it sounds good, but if it was so great don't you think one of the majors would have bought it up and made millions...........Teflon, silicon, yadda yadda yadda. I can pour Nitromethane in my oldsmobile cutlass but that doesn't mean it is good for it. Seriously though, I have worked extensively with Conoco and Sunoco oils and greases for years doing real research and development on off highway 1,500 to 4,000 horse power stuff. What it all amounts to is use the best oil, keep it clean and when it is about to wear out, change it. Put your money into good oil and filters. If you want to quantify your oil program. Sample it and send it off to the lab for a wide battery of tests each time you change the oil and filters......like: TBN - Total Base Number - tell you when the oil is losing lube properties Viscosity Water in oil Wear Metals - Iron, lead, tin, copper, chromium, etc Add package - Potassium, boron, magnesium Contaminants - Aluminum, silicon Fuel in the oil etc etc Record the data and analyze the effects of the changes over time. Such as 3,000 hour changes to 4,000 hour changes. etc. Hope this helps, Bob |
