It can be done, you'll have to drill steam holes in the 305 heads, it will raise the compression considerably and the heads and intake will be quite restrictive for the 400. If you just need to do it to make the car run and can afford the Premium fuel it will need it will work but if you're expecting the 400 to make any HP I don't recommend it. It will probably hit a wall about 4000 RPM, the off idle response will be great though. That's just my $.02 though.

Once again I am suggesting the forum search box be placed near the top of the page so more people see it and use it. This is another one of those questions that has been asked more times than I care to think of...

They wouldn't flow enough air to make it worth it.

ive read a ton of 305 head on 350's but none on a 400

i certainly wouldn't put those heads on the 400 it wont make any power, even if you put the 416's and put the larger valves in them it still wont make good power, i'd go with a set of aftermarket iron heads, some may tell you to put vortecs on it but i dont even like vortecs on a 400, i barely like them on a 383, but on a 350 street motor they work great

What's the difference? Its still the same issue either way. And yes this question has been asked plenty of times on here.

because a 400 has bigger pistons and is a bigger engine than even a 350 and it will be suffocated alot more than a 350 would be even, with said heads on it,

the heads would at the very least needs tons of porting and pocketing and such done, and also bigger valves

and plus the steam holes drilled

i mean if you want to spend so much cash on them and then still not know for sure how it will do without actually trying them then go for it.

i would probably at least try to score some good used iron eagles or something first though, should be able to find such a thing on craigslist or somewhere for a few hundred at the most and have wayyyyy better flowing heads,

for a 400 that is..

ive run 4416 and such 305 heads on many 350 engines in the past but i just dont see myself ever wanting to try them on a 400.

its just different.,.

each has their own opinion though..

good luck!

Back in the 80's Car Craft, IIRC, put a 400 shortblock in a 3rd Gen Camaro with the stock 305 heads and TPI on top of it. It was a screamer from an idle to about 3500 and then fell on it's face. With headers and some other work they were able to get 4500 out of it but power still fell off severely at 4000.
