zz3 motor. starter skips?

I have a crate chevy motor in my 50 merc. I had an instance, [only one]where i drove it 24 miles to a cruise nite. I backed it in , Then changed my mind about the spot i had chosen.So........... i quick turned the engine over, ....and lost the other spot 15' away. The starter is the small type. it hit and the gears clashed.........then again i tried to turn it over' and it sounded as if the starter missed the flywheel altogether. One more try, and it started right up. It doesn't ever get hot The "engine"wasn't really broken in..........it had set in a barn since new in 93. There was a drag on one cylinder that has since gotten smoothed out ,past the interuppted running of the engine.do to the tight cylinder. Question: [ SHIMMING the starter on the engine is something i was never good at ..so being like this;........... i forget what little i knew about this job altogether Any help is greatly appreciated thanks for looking bob s

Shimming the starter isn't that difficult. You can find plenty of info and instructions online, just Google it. The other thing about starters is they need to be mounted with the correct starter bolts. Of course the brand of starter needs to be considered as well. There are alot of off shore starters that hit the market. Powerhouse makes a good quality high torque (small body mini) starter. Here is a link to a youtube video on how to shim a sbc starter, hope it helps.

You need to address this problem before the flywheel gets hurt. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
