I have a 305 tbi 91 and a guy offered my a zz4 camshaft and i was wanting to know if i can use it in my 305. What kind of upgrade would it offer in hp and torque.
Just to say he wants $40 and said he paid $300 will it work with the computer.
This cam can work very well in a 305.
Like any performance cam it likes increased compression ratio, improved head port flow
improved intake and exhaust.
10:1 and a BBC TBI on a Performer RPM intake, Ported 305HO heads.
Long tube headers and dual exhaust. 3000 stall and 3.73+ gears
and your 305 will be a whole different motor.
208-221@.050" 112lsa .474 -.510 112lsa.
Use ZZ4 springs or ZO6 LS springs and the comp 787-16 retainers.
Or a high pressure stock spring (isky 235D)
If you just stuff it in a stock TBI truck motor don't expect much.
The camshaft is the "gatekeeper" to a motor. But the rest of the motor combo has to be "on the same page"
for it to work.
well its a 91 caprice 305 tbi roller motor i think cast iron heads shorty headers hot plugs and wires.
So the cam will work with stock computer but will be best with upgrade valve springs?
and for $40 is it worth it i dont want a race car just more sound and alittle more power.
The computer may want some adjustment to the fuel curve. May be as simple as a adjustable fuel pressure regulator. or swaping in injectors from a 5.7Liter motor. or use the BBC TBI throttle body.
the motor will want gears as the torque curve will be at a higher rpm.
gears and a high stall really helps with a performance cam.
get a 245MM diameter high stall converter for a 305 with a cam. Don;t be shy on the stall or gears.
3000+ stall 245MM "lock up" converter 3.73-4.10 gears. Cammed motors want rpm.
The camshaft is only one part of the total equation.
remember a 4.10 gear tames right down to a hiway cruiser 2.87:1 gear, when in overdrive.
I dont want to change my rear gear and i just rebuilt my trans with a corvette kit and new converterand i dont want to change it.
I am sure i read somewhere that the 305 and 350 tbi injectors are the same but the fuel pump and computer gave more psi.
I dont have a problem changing the cam and valve springs i will do a port polish thin also but i realy dont want to change everything.
The motor don;t care what you want.. Cammed motors want rpm gears compression and converter stall.
Especially small CID motors.
ya but after putting all that money into them i can just get a 350 tbi and computer.
If when you figure that out don;t buy less than 4.10's for your caprice.
Don;t buy less than a 3000 real stall (a advertized 3500stall will only see about 3000 rpm ral stall when behind a little 305.)
If its not 245MM diameter converter do not buy at any price. It wont be the right converter for a cammed 305.

real deal high stall lock up converters with lock up for the th700r4 th4l60 and th2004r trans.
It all has to work together. Cammed motors want rpm compression and air flow.
The ZZ4 cam makes for a good street supercharger cam, in a 305. Your friend got a spare supercharger
weiand 142 edelbrock Magnuson MP122 roots style blower
Vortech, Procharger, Paxton centrifugal blower.
you keep giving me all these high hp parts and $1000 converter and as i said I DO NOT WANT A DRAG CAR. I just want to know if this car will work with my computer and if my car will run with this cam. I just want alittle more hp and sound their are other people running this cam with tbi and stock parts.
Don't expect much from this in a stock 305 TBI motor.
its like a conductor trying to lead a orchestra that cannot play music and don't know the song.
And your attitude won't change that.
I dont expect much from this 305 tbi as i said i dont want a race car i just want sound and alittle more hp.
Online the 91 caprice 305 tbi is rated at 170 hp if i can get it to 200 hp i will be happy its a show car not a hot rod, drag racer, street racer, ect...
I dont have a attitude with you im just telling you a 3000 stall in a show car not worth $500-$1000.
Well if you can find the origional OEM GM torque converter that was installed on the 1987
Monte Carlo SS with the 305HO motor. It is the right converter.
This was a special onique OEM high stall torque converter that gave a 3000 stall with lock up behind the 305 HO Monte Carlo motor with the th2004r trans. The 305HO cam used in that motor was pretty close to the ZZ4 cam. (it was a bit milder by a few degrees than the ZZ4 but bigger than the stock TBI cam.
and needed that high stall and the OEM 3.73 gears (or more)
the motor does not get busy until 3000+rpm when cammed up.
Stock 305's are very easy to overcam. You won't like it with the stock low stall OEM caprice torque converter.
Or the OEM Caprice rear gear ratio.
I don;t know the OEM GM part number or the OEM GM K code ID number to ID it. Other than it is 245MM diameter.
But thats the Cheap solution if you can find one.
get that and the 7.5" 4.10 gears from a old S10 truck rear end (usually 4 cylinder) and you are good to go with the ZZ4 cam in a 305.
your 305 caprice will actually go pretty good, then. Now you got something that is not all bark no bite. (poser car)
If you just want sound just pull 1 or 2 spark plug wires off, and drill a few holes in the muffler, as required.
i would never change my 700r4 for a 200r4 and you keep giving me transmission and rear end.
I dont care if its all bark and no bite i want bark so im getting the cam and ill go from their.
