zz4 camshaft in non roller block??

I have the zz4 camshaft out of my 48mile crate engine, I'd like to use it in my son's 355 Camaro engine. I have a set of fresh zz4 heads with the lt4 valve springs and retainers for his engine, and would really like to reuse the cam as it is basically free and new, but am unsure what to do with the stepped front face where the cam retainer was on the later model block.I plan on a set of Howards retro fit lifters, rather than grinding and tapping the block for the octopus and the 3.1 lifters. Any ideas?

Easily done. First you will need the proper upper gear with the small bolt pattern. Several suppliers for double roller chains have these.

You will also need a 5.7 or 4.3 cam thrust plate. This won't be bolted to the block. Just used as a spacer. I usually knock the ears off and make it like a thick spacer.

Three button head or allen head 5/16 bolts to assemble. The bolts may have to be shortened slightly on the socket head area to clear thrust button.

An aftermkt thrust button (aluminum is easiest) is then used with the small end toward the cam (in other words backwards). Then trim the large end to get end play from button to front cover.

Works great.

is there a way to use the retainer and drill and tap the block to make it work without the cam button?

No threadable casting boss material around front cam bearing.

so, a really good marketing idea would be to make an interference fit spacer for the zz4 and hot cam that you could heat and press on! The same thickness as the stock retainer, and o.d. as the front cam journal, with an interference fit in the stepped front of the camshaft. Do you think the unsecured spacer would cause wear on the block face?

So far spacer has caused no problems. Actually acts as more thrust bearing surface. My work partner has the original setup that I devised four years ago. 383 in "G" body. Daily driver.
