Part 3: The Hood
Jim Weimer

The hood was pretty straightforward. I wanted a cowl hood but I didn't like the $500 price tag for a steel cowl hood. Again, I wanted something different. I was trying to come up with something that I liked. I made several templates and designs out of cardboard. I just happened to look down at my old fenders and thought -- Hey! the hood would have the same curvature as the fenders and it would definitely be something that you don't see everyday.

I cut off the tops of the fenders at the bodyline and started trimming them to fit (mainly 6" out of the length).

Once I got them where I liked them, I tacked the fender tops to the hood and trimmed out the center section. I laid the center piece on top of the fender and started tack welding everything together.

I haven't worked on the hood much lately, I still am not sure if I like the look of it or not. Who knows -- something might come to me and it could get cut apart again like the bumper did...LOL!
