Post must II fr. end into 49 chevy

Is there any reason why you cant just use a stock must II cross member with some kind of welded brace instead of using a kit? Im wanting to put disc brakes and mustang steering in a 49 chevy fleetline. The width is damn near identical and when I was a kid a saw a few shade tree rods with must II front ends welded straight to box steel rails. Oh well, I figured id ask some folks who know more than me. Thanks

I've done two of 'em, one in a '36 Pontiac 4dr sedan and one in an award winning '42 Willys puckup with a tilt up nose so you know it ha to look right. Don't know what you mean by "welded brace" but the x-member goes just like it looks like it should and trailing arm brackets from the MII are bolted to the frame with some easy modification. Biggest mistake people make is to weld a bracket on the frame rails for the trailing arm. I am on a mission to point out broken trailing arm brackets to unsuspecting rodders at rod runs.

That being said, junk yards rule! I will never buy a kit for anyhting I can salvage out of a junkyard! I am into hot rodding not kit car building.

Send me your email address and I will send scans of a couple of tech articles that show step by step instructions for this installation.

Cool re: must II fr. end into 49 chevy

Willys36,

Send me those articles, too. I have a Mustang II front end to install onto a 1935 Ford Sedan. I got it on eBay with a (Heidts?) cross-member from a '32 Ford. It hasn't arrived yet, so I haven't checked dimensions yet to see how close the cross-member matches my frame. I'll be using a small block chevy with Turbo 350. Thanks.

Fred; My articles apply to installing a stock Ford X-member. They wouldn't be much help in installing an after market unit. Those have instruction manuals (or you can probably request one from the manfacturer if the one you got is missing).

Willys36,

Thanks, sometimes the wrong information is worse than no information. Since this crossmember I'm getting is from a '32, I don't know if I'll even be able to adapt it. If not, I might end up looking for a stock cross-member instead of spending $600 on a new after-market one. If you could send the article just in case, it might be put to good use. If not, I might learn something anyway. (I'm a babe in the woods when it comes to suspensions) Thanks

Willys36,

I got the e-mail, thanks for the perseverance. I don't know why you got a "Full Mailbox" message the first time. I check it regularly. I printed it out and will use it as an extra reference in my attempts. Thanks. fredbyam@swbell.net

Which one did you get? I sent two yesterday and got "can't deliver, size exceeds mailbox limitis" on both. Evidentally one snuck thru. I'll try shrinking file size to get it thru but resolution will suffer a little.
