I have a 1952 ford f1 pickup and it is all original. I need to know if anyone has ever done a brake swap to discs. You can tell that the truck was built in 1952 not only by its looks but by the way it makes you feel when you try to stop it. I dont mind mods but im not much of a welder. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Before I upgraded suspensions on my F1 I did a disc brake conversion on it. It was a big improvement over the old drum brake set up. I used a conversion kit from ECI at the time and also switched over to a dual master cylinder. If you switch over to the disc set up and leave the master cylinder under the floor boards make sure that you install residual valves in the lines. Use 2# in the front line and 10# in the rear line.

You've got great brakes in your F1. (compared to my 36 Lincoln!)

If you've got the time to research it, you can do it without a kit. From what I've seen, it looks like the Ford kits are using a rotor from another vehicle that has an integral hub. They typically bolt up to the stock spindles. The only thing you have to figure out is the caliper bracket. I know that a lot of companies selling the disc kits for Chevys will sell just the brackets, which saves you some cash. ...and you don't even have to weld anything
So talk to some people at a car show who have done the swap and see what rotors they are using or make some measurements and head to your local junkyard and you're well on your way. If that sounds a bit too time-consuming, you can also check out : http://www.classicperform.com/ |

1952 Ford F1 Suspension and Brakes
This is my first restoration. My F-1 has original front end suspension. A 289 and automatic transmission from a '66 Mustang was installed by a previous owner. I'm thinking we should install IFS, as well as disc brakes, and possibly move master cylinder to the firewall.
Does this make sense? I have seen there are several kits available for this conversion, but I was wondering if there is a reasonable way to accomplish this by cannabilizing a later model vehicle. Any thoughts? thanks. our52ford |
