Post Front Drums to Disks on 68 Cutlass

Does anyone know of a cheap junk yard swap that I could use. I have looked and found kits for around $900. That is a little expensive for me right now. Any ideas would be great. Has anyone done this on a cutlass or that chassis?

Cory

Cool re: Front Drums to Disks on 68 Cutlass

64 to 72 a body gm frames are all the same, except slight improvements, use a disc brake set up from a 70 to 72 chevelle, cutlas, lemans, monte carlo, skylark.the control arms you have now are the same, all you need are the spindles, you can buy new disc and rebuilt calipers at any parts store, disca are 50 bucks each and calipers are 20 each.
i swapped a disc set up out of a 72 monte carlo for my 65 gto ragtop. man does it work great. dont forget to grab the proportioning valve. if your car already has one, and it should for 68, you can use your old one. hope that helps.

So the new spindels will bolt right in, in place of my old spindels?
Sounds Great

Thanks,

I think the Camaro is also the same as the A body cars as well. Not all the spindles are the same. You may end up using half of your existing spindle and half the spindle from the disc brake car. You won't find many of these in the junk yards any more, but you may get lucky. You will also have to change the backing plate as it is not the same as the drum backing plate.

Post re: Front Drums to Disks on 68 Cutlass

I have changed many A body [GM]cars to front disc brakes, you have a 68,look for 69-70 disc brake set up,[71-72 will work but grab the distribution valve / proportioning valve off of the frame, plus the brake lines from the master cylinder to the block on the frame. You will have to change this out with the 71-72 units]it all bolts on,use the entire spindle assy off of monte carlo,gto,442,etc. any A body, stay away from 67-68 4 piston disc brakes, unless you are restoring the car.the calipers and rotors to fit are very costly,on the 69-70 a-body,there is a valve by the master cylinder, some people call it the proportioning valve, you need this piece, plus get a new disc brake master cylinder.Camaro 67-69 will work or Nova 68-74 will work, but you will need to change the steering arms, the drum brakes steering arms will bolt on the camaro/nova set up.This is not a hard change over,If you don't have power brakes, get a power brake unit,it helps.keep in mind that when you hook up the rod from the power unit to the pedal, use the lower hole in your brake pedal,I have seen people trying to use the upper hole,it won't work, the rod will hit the upper part of the power unit and will bind up.Hope that this helps.Good luck
