Big day today! I just got my '49 Chevy truck licensed and registered and on the road.
My question: My truck has a Mustang II front end. It is not a kit, it is an actual Mustang II front. After driving it today I've decided that I have to rebuild it (Rattles, Clunks and Leaks). I'm assumeing that I'm going to have to know what year it is in order to get the right kit. Or are they all the same? Where do I look for part numbers. And is there a site somewhere with all of this info? Thanks in advance. Ed |

re: How do I tell what year Mustang II front end?
You might want to check out the thread I started on 5-30-03 with kind of the same question. Willys36 says he rebuilds the units. However, when I went to Napa, they told me they can't get the rebuild kits and only offer the rebuilt units. Mine's a power unit and the price I got, and the price from a local parts/speed shop, for a rebuilt was about $145. Frankly, for that kind of money, I'd rather get the rebuilt from someone who knows their stuff (I assume) than to hope I got the deep seals in right and trust my life to my first time rebuild. Just my opinion. My leaking unit has casting numbers in the front of the unit near gear housing, on the back near the right side dust boot and small plate in the front center. I am not sure what they mean, or what I need to know. I posted this question on the mustangii.net forum and nobody answered. Good luck-let us know what you find out.

re: How do I tell what year Mustang II front end?
5-window is right, remanufactured steering gears are a great bargain for the price. I rebuild my own because I enjoy the work - alternative to a shrink I guess.
Oh, and 5-window, there is no problem determining if you get the deep seal in properly - if you don't, it takes about two revs of the power steering pump to engorge the rubber boots with all the fluid in the system. You would be amazed at how big those boots will blow up without bursting. Sounds like I know shat I am talking about doesn't it!?! For the A-arm bushings, ball joints etc., I am not positive but I believe that the MII/Pinto/Bobcat, etc. front ends of that era are all pretty much the same. I know the after-market guys sell rebuild kits and I don't recall them being anal about specifying years and model #s. Call the Ford parts guy at your dealer and he can tell you if there are different part #s for the stuff. I depend on Debby at my local parts store for that info - she knows EVERYTHING about car parts right off the top of her head. |

re: How do I tell what year Mustang II front end?
When it comes to bushings, ball joints and bearings Mustang II front ends are all alike. Speedway Motors http://www.speedwaymotors.com/ sells a Mustang II rebuild kit for about $125 which includes pretty much everything you'll need except a rebuilt rack. Just about any auto parts store can supply you with a rack.
Good luck. Centerline http://www.hotrodsandhemis.com

re: How do I tell what year Mustang II front end?
Thanks alot everyone. I just went to speedway and looked at their kit. It looks pretty good. Now this brings up another question. Is one kit better than another or are there different materials for the bushings. This truck is just a daily driver/grocery gitter so I don't need killer race suspension but I do want something that will last and give me a good ride.
