Hey guys couple questions please
One "My' ford rear end is about 50 inches flange to flange maybe 51 if I read it upside down. It has drum brakes which I am satisfied with. [Installed in my 37 Ford car]
Two How do you tell the 8 verses the 9 inch rear ends?
Three How can I tell what ratio I have 'In the car' ..it acts like I am always taking off in second.

I suspect from the shape of the 'visual' its a 7.5

Both the 8 incher and the 9 incher have 10 bolts holding them in.




If you have to use a wrench instead of a socket on the ones marked in the blue arrows.............it is a 9 inch.

I just checked and both are wrench. But I believe it is a 7.5 as it appears more rectangular than 'oval' as the 9 inchers seem to apear. It has three across the top and three across the bottom, two on each side. I think it is not an 8 or 8.8 ..or a nine ...in the Summit catalogue there are picutures on page 194...the 7.5 is most like what I have visuslly from [under the car]

Most 8" have much more ribbing as well. They have the look of a nodular iron carrier in a smaller size, there is also a 9 1/4" rear that uses the same housing (different pumpkin) as the 9". All the other rearends (7.5,8.5 and 8.8, not to mention the early 6 cylinder rearends) are all intregal carriers.

Whats an intergal carrier?

Instead of a removable pumpkin (carrier) that houses the gears/differential, it has a access cover on the back and the gears are in the axle housing.

okay then if I take it out the front its got to be either 8 or 9 and since the wrench thingie is hex its a nine? Any other clues?

Could be Mopar, 55 to 64 Chevy or a Pontiac/Buick ECT

What is the wheel pattern ??

I bought it with the car as a project...am using Keystone classics unilug. Has five bolt 2.5 inches between bolts on center..had Lincoln turbine wheels on it when I got it so am somewhat convinced its Ford. I tried to take and send pictures but it keeps rejecting my file as not JPG. Jpg is all I got so don't know what its problem is but if you would provide me an e-mail I might be able to send pics to you directly...its slow but has worked before.

If the lug is 2 and 1/2 inches from the center of the axle.........your pattern would be 5 on 5 inches. Which is a Lincoln pattern.

does your pinion support have CA8W-4668-B cast into it?

A Lincoln 9 and 3/8 does.......

here is what I got so far....the pinion housing seems unmarked.
The rear casting has a mark of {2each} reversed 'Cs' over a spread 'W'.

The drain plug [if it is a drain plug] is flush on the drivers side facing forward. It has a small 1/4 inch slot for [I assume] removal. Another casting number I saw was
'4C15' and there was a big upside down 23 stamped in the casting under the tag.

There is a tag which says: WDW-U1 4DA
3.00 8 531A
There appears to be more intricate webbing than the above picture.

What you think? I'm going to the site to try and figure out whats what but need your opinion

Am presently unable to identify from provided sites. Also forgot to mention the unit has two dimples on backside but no drain plug there. Also the pinion cover has no ID

WDW U is a 3.00 gear from a 71 Maverick or 71 Comet

Thanks looks like I am at least knowing what I have. I did a search on the net for WDW-U and came up with a Mustang II club listing...www.mustangii.org/decorder/axle i think its on one of your sheets...maybe not if not maybe you wnat to add it. This site says item was used 1974-1977 is an 8 inch it offers a picture of what I have so I know about where I am manufactured and some of the uses.

You been a big help getting me going thanks.

Also talked to a guy at National Differential who thinks he can find one for about 125, probably tomorrow I might drive over there to see what his place looks like.
