Quiet electric fuel pump ?
Would like to know who makes the best electric fuel pump (external) for noise. The one I have in a street rod is very loud when you turn the key on. I don't mind spending the money to get a good one. I would rather ask the people here that have the experience than buy one the is still loud.

re: Quiet electric fuel pump ?
what do you have the fuel pump attached to? what i have found is to mount it on some sort of rubber pad or use rubber insulators on the bolts that hold the pump on. there is alot of sound that travels throught the frame, insulating the pump with rubber between it and the frame reduces the sound quite a bit.

re: Quiet electric fuel pump ?
I have had good luck with the Mallory 110 or 140 they are pretty quiet compared to others

re: Quiet electric fuel pump ?
I use the good old Carter CRT-P4070 $60, 6psi unit on all my cars. Mounted using the supplied rubber isolated mounting bracket, it is very quiet. Being a rotary makes it inherently much more quiet that a vibrating diaphragm type. Best value on the market in fuel pumps IMHO.

re: Quiet electric fuel pump ?
The is mounted on the frame towards the back of the car. Not sure if it was mounted with rubber as it is wrap in foil insulation. I will check this later but excellent point.
The pump I am using right now is a Carter P 4070...4-5 3/4 psi. It works fine just to noisey. It's a Free Flow rotary-vane non pulsating pump. Last edited by western star : 08-31-2004 at 01:17 PM. |

re: Quiet electric fuel pump ?
Hmmm . . . . That's the pump I like. If it is mounted in the rubber isolators, guess it is just too noisy for you. Wait 'til you are my age and you won't be able to hear much of anything so irritating noises magically disappear!

re: Quiet electric fuel pump ?
You could always go with an in the tank pump like production cars use now. It would require some adapting and the use of a pressure regulator if your carburated.

Quiet mount
Doc here
Here is a trick I have used for a quiet mount on a noisy fuel pump. Measure the distance between mount holes on the pump and go to the auto parts store and get a RUBBERIZED transmission mount for any car that the rubber mat is long enough to cover the pump mount holes... Next from the rear of the mount, drill , Countersink and install two screws 1/4 20's flush heads ought to due .. To mount the pump to the transmission mount, and fill the screw head with a dab of RTV. Next mark the transmission mount holes on the frame and bolt or drill and tap the frame Don't forget to add a Good ground wire. Use Loctite on all the bolts/screws and double nut the pump nuts. That will give you a quiet running pump. Hope it helps! Doc

re: Quiet electric fuel pump ?
Thanks all. Doc I have noted your idea. I think you guys hit the nail on the head with the rubber mounting. I'll be taking the hot rod off the road shortly for some other stuff and once I get it up in the air I'll try some of your ideas and let you know. Thanks for your help. Oh ya I am also getting on in years but still have my hearing (sort of) so the pump must be quiet for now.

re: Quiet electric fuel pump ?
Years ago, I installed an electric fuel pump on a Corvair and I thought Woody the Wood Pecker had taken up residence in the engine bay. This was the recipocating type and went on and off every few seconds and most irritating. Tried about ever kind of rubber mounting and finally gave up. Traded that hummer in. Now I have an inline rotary pump for the EFI and except for the initial turn on, I never hear or feel it. Not hearing may because of old age, but definitely improved pumps today. It is encased in a foam sleeve much like an inslutator to keep your beer cold. You could modify one with some weatherstripping glue and probably never hear it again.

re: Quiet electric fuel pump ?
Put a block mounted pump on it, BG makes 2 that will feed up to 700 HP or so for the SBC. One of them needs no regulator that works just fine for me and you can rebuild them. About $99 at Summit or others. Thats the Speedway pumps Same stuff that NASCAR runs.

re: Quiet electric fuel pump ?
I also like the Carter rotary pump, very carb friendly and needs no regulator for Holleys and Carters. My 1981 RX7 had one mounted below the wheel well on the drivers side and it drove me nuts even with the supplied rubber insulators...it was noisy in a small car like an RX7 where the sheetmetal is thin.
What I did was fabricate an aluminum shield and lined it with 1/4" rubber (glued on with contact cement) with the open end down, once the pump was installed inside the shield the noise was considerably less inside the car...except with the windows down it was still noisy. With the pump shield open ended the noise would reflect off the ground causing noise outside the car, I then added a bottom shield lined with rubber and it solved the problem entirely. My box was hardly water proof with open joints but it did the job without sealing the pump off from cooling air and proper drainage. Remember, reflected sound is just as bad as transmitted and there are many ways to skin a cat...going mechanical is a good option too. |

re: Quiet electric fuel pump ?
I used to run a blue holley elec. pump on my big block camaro, it was mounted on rubber mounts on the rear frame by the tank on the right side. and it still drove me nuts. so I ended up getting a hi pref. mech. holley instead. ohh yeah my car is running 3.5 inch dual exhaust and straight through mufflers.
