1.3 / 1.4 tips for SPI clear

For SPI Universal 4000-1clear:

I've got a 1.3 tip for my color/clear gun. SPI says to use 1.4 tip.

I'm an old school nitro & enamel guy from the 70's and 80's and used to use just about anything to spritz a car, not much experience with the new stuff. Are they being overly cautious or is there really such a difference 'tween 1.3 and 1.4 tips?

1.3 will work but it is slow, much easier to use the 1.4, faster and the clear seems to 'flow" out better imho.

i picked up a few Devillbis downdraft models.... one for primer, one for color. I'll have to get a 1.4 tip, I did feel the surface of the chassis was was a bit starved with the urethane with the 1.3 tip on that new-fangled HVLP gun.

I have 4 Binks model 2001 siphons with various tip set-ups, most going back to the 70's. You just can't kill a good 2001.

Ahhhhh, the days when lacquer would just splop out of the gun and create perfection in a matter of 30 minutes.

I tossed my siphon gun as far as could once I used the hvlp. I bought that siphon gun when drinking and driving was stylish in the 70's.

A 1.3 tip gun is all I have for base and clear, and don't have any issues spraying the SPI universal clear. It will work.

i use a 1.3 for clear on my iwata . personally i prefer the 1.3 . depending on the gun a 1.4 can lead to solvent pop .

a lot of cheaper guns end up piling on the clear. the larger the tip the thicker the coat . that was a big issue with older siphon guns . they just would not break it up unless you cranked up the air and you ended up hosing it on . with clear i prefer multiple thin coats instead of heavy coats.
