Had a '62 SS for many years, there is nothing in the VIN that would indicate it was an SS. The proof is in the trim tag on the driver's side firewall, if it has the code for bucket seats it is an SS if it doesn't it's not an SS. No '62 SS was built with a bench and buckets were NOT available in a standard Impala. You could get a '62 SS with anything from a 6 banger to a 409 Dual Quad and a Power Glide or 3 speed on the column with a short console between the seats or a 4 speed with an additional front section for the console. No factory PG or 3 speed floorshifts in '62. It should also have a grab handle on the dash in front of the passenger seat instead of the starburst medallion found in a standard Impala. The handle will say Impala SS right in it. NO engine turned stainless in the interior like later models either, it had the same alternating rectangle checkered pattern as the std. Impala. Oh yeah, according to GM the '62 SS had a 1-1/2" lower ride height than other models, the only year to do so. Don't bother trying to find the '62 SS specific springs tough, they haven't existed for decades.
