302 ford tick sound??

hey guys whats up i have a problem ok i have a ford 302 small block with edelbrock performer intake and carb and just installed some hooker super comp shorty headers. Lately i have been hearing a ticking sound from the driver side exhaust and it gets worse when i step on the brakes but when i let off it goes back to the regular tick tick tick and i don't know if it could be a vacuum leak or it might not be fully firing on the 8th cylinder could you point me in the right direction thanks tons!!

Are the plugs clean, with maybe a bit of tan color - then all are probably firing correctly. Since you just installed some new headers, I would almost guess a small exhaust leak. Did you use gaskets to install the headers - sounds like a dumb question, but some headers mfr's (Sanderson) suggest RTV instead - I still use gaskets. Also, is there a weld at the flange that's bad. When you step on the brakes, if power brakes, they do "bleed" some vacuum and will change the flow characteristics a wee bit. Also, if the MC/booster is under the floorboards, is there a vacuum line leak. Then, a Performer has an EGR flange and a cover if the EGR isn't used - I had a leak there on a 351W, tho it is on the passenger side. Is the collector flange leaking? Unusual on a Ford 'W', but is the intake leaking? Are the spark plugs all tight? Some aftermarket headers are very close to the spark plugs. My Sanderson headers and my GT40 heads are not a combo made in automobile heaven. I need a 'special' socket for at least 4 plugs.

I'm betting a exhaust leak but.....I had a tick like you described...on driverside...it was the fuel pump arm click-click-click'in.

my intake manifold is non egr i did us some fel-pro header gaskets but what is strange is it made the same sound when the factory exhast manifolds were on and the sound only comes out of the driverside exhast pipe i was thinking it was the number 8 cylinder cause its running cooler than 7,6 and 5 but the plugs were nice, tan and were on snug so im wondering if it could be an exhast valve tapping or something like that what do you guys think??

Depending on the year, some '70s/'80's 302's had problems with a bit of piston "slap". That is the skirt doesn't hold its cam ground shape. Generally harmless in a street driven car.
