350 build questions

hello yall. im new here. my name is wade. live in southern KY. im working on trying to finish building a 350 that's been bored .080 over with a monster cam and forged dome pistons. I don't know much else about it. no paperwork.. I haven't had time to tear it down and check out what exactly is in it. but I figured talking to people here would set me in the right direction with my build as far as parts and set ups go.

Welcome! .080 over, what does that make it? Sounds like a little monster. Maybe this should be a new thread, but what problems does it have that you are taking it apart?

nothing wrong with it. I just took over the build from a guy that know and no longer have contact with him to find out what exactly is in it. in order to put proper parts on it to finish it I need to know what im working with. from what I understand it is bored .080 over with a 600 lyft cam and forged dome race pistons. all brand new 0 miles. what I don't know is the type of cam, the material its made with or if its a roller cam or not. and I don't know anything about what crank is in it. but the block is completely built I just need to do the upper half, lifters, rods, heads, rockers and intake. and then all the accessories.

Pull the pan and have a look-see. Verify that the pump pickup is secured to the pump. Also check the clearance, pickup to pan. Should be 3/8" to 1/2".

I predict that no amount of radiator or water pump will prevent the motor from overheating, due to thin cylinder walls. Motor GURU Smokey Yunick taught us that the rings do not slide smoothly along the cylinder bore, but move in little, jerky motions. This jerky motion translates into vibrations in the walls that separate the cooling water on the other side of the wall into little air bubbles if the walls have insufficient mass to cancel the vibrations. These air bubbles will cling to the walls of the cylinders on the cooling water side of the cylinder and prevent cooling water from removing heat from the walls. And this results in an overheating motor that cannot be cured. Nothing will fix it except more cylinder wall thickness.

Smokey was a very savvy engine builder, he used to cut into blocks and install glass windows so that he could view what was going on when the motor was running. I'm not that smart, but I'm glad Smokey was.

If that is a stock block, and it wasn't sonic checked to prove it has enough cylinder wall thickness to be ok, you are going to have problems from that .080" overbore.

Overheating or outright failure/cracking/ventilated cylinder.

Not a fan of unknown motors.

If you want to know what exactly you have, tear it down (that's what I'd do if i was serious about it). Otherwise if the motor is running fine with the current set up that's in place, then just run it.

4.080 is up there man

55Tony 350 bored .080 over would make it a 364 cubic inch V8. and thank you techinspector, ill keep those things in mind when I get back around to getting her pulled apart and back together. ericnova, I know being bored that much can cause issues, i have zero money into this engine as of right now and I don't know if its been sonic checked but I will now. I wouldn't have thought about that. I was told by the guy that he was setting it up to be able to run nitrous but im not going to run nitrous with it. rdobbs, tearing it down is exactly what im going to be doing with it once I have the time again. I don't normally go for a half built unknown engine, but I could look at it and see it and all the performance parts that were in it, and it was free. so I couldn't pass it up.

Pull the cam button in the rear of the engine. Most cams will have ID numbers there that you can look up and see what it is. With no heads on it mic the cylinders or read the piston tops and see if it is really .080 over

thank you Fang16. ive already learned quite a bit from you guys and I haven't even gotten started yet. once I do start ill be able to glide right thru everything I need to do.
