47 Merc hood, nothing to thread the hinge shoulder bolts into

Bought a partially complete 47 Mercury rod. Is there an insert I'm missing in the hood where the hinge shoulder bolts thread in. Just open holes only hood, and virtually impossible to gain access to put a nut in there. Any help appreciated. 82 yr old fat fender lover.

Open up the hole large enough to slip a flanged nut in and weld it in place flush. Grind the surface smooth and wallah. Fixed!

One way I have done stuff like that too is to make a nut out of a piece of flat stock, 1/4" flat stock. Make it as big as you can still work with it. Drill a couple of holes next to the hole where the bolt will go to plug weld it in place. Stuff it under the brace fed through the hole with a piece of wire (mig wire works great) then plug weld it.

I was gonna say rivnuts, but this seems a better solution.

IF you can get in there, and you can cut a slot in the brace and weld it up after you get the nut in if needed.
