4L60E fluid return into transmission

I exchanged all my fluid in my 4L60E by removing the return hose off the transmission cooler and adding fluid down the dipstick at the same time while the engine is running. It was always within half a quart plus/minus so I don't think there was any problem there. My question is, a friend said Allison transmissions use the fluid on the return to lubricate, does the 4L60E need this lubrication when it's running, or does it just return to the pan? Does anyone have a diagram? Thanks!

Transmissions use return fluid for lubrication.

If you are worried about having done harm don't be.

Nothing inside the transmission other than the pump was turning.

Okay, thanks that's what I was concerned about. I found a tech diagram that shows the return going back to the transmission and then going through the Reverse Input Clutch Assembly and from there it looks like it goes to the pan maybe.

I was afraid of doing damage possibly when an Allison transmission tech said it would on an Allison, I wonder what that one uses it for, or maybe he wasn't correct...

Thanks for the assistance!

Same same. Unless the vehicle is moving or on jack stands there is no use for concern.
