4x4 from a '85 700r4 fit a '94 4L60E?

I have a '85 K5 that came with a 305 and a 700r4 with 4x4. I recently picked up a 350 from a '94 blazer/suburban/Yukon, etc. (Dont know which exactly, got that from the casting numbers). The new 94 engine came with a TBI, instead of the 4bbl I have on the 305, so it has a pcm. I want to keep the TBI, because I'm tired of adjusting the carb everytime I was to spend some time up in the mountains (I am from colorado), so I'm looking at picking a 4L60E I found on craigslist for cheap. Thing is, it's out of a 94 camaro, so its rwd. Can the 4x4 from my 700r4 fit the new 4L60E?

Pretty sure, NO.....4x4 trans has a different output shaft and tailhousing than a 2 wheel drive (shorter)

However, the 700r4 is also known as the 4L60. So basically I am asking if an 85 4L60 4x4 can be attached to a 94 4L60e transmission. Obviously if it fits I can just swap the output shaft and tail housing, cant I?

To swap the output shaft, the trans has to be completely taken apart.

You don't need an electronic trans to run a TBI motor.

Yes and no it depends. There is a 4 bolt and a 6 bolt 4l60.

Now you should have the 4 bolt the change was late 95 to 96.

The 2wd has the vss built into the tail housing with a longer output shaft.

The 4wd has the vss built into the transfer case with a shorter output shaft.

Here is a short video showing the two in a 6 bolt case.

You need a 4wd 4l60e and the transfer case with vss to make the thing shift correctly. I would let the 2wd transmission go and find a 90 or 91 4l60e with passenger side drop 241 from a square body body style k5 blazer or suburban.

The 90/91 have the vss built into the 241 transfer case which will allow the transmission to shift. These years are also TBI which will work with your 350 perfectly. You should be able to pull and transplant the entire harness into your 85.

Your mechanical speedo will not work anymore you will need a vss to mechanical adapter.



That being said we are talking about a lot of freaking work to put in what I consider a weak transmission.

The 700 you currently have is already there and already bolted up to a 241(or208). You can make that work much easier then running a 4l60e.

As far as the tbi conversion is considered. Just run a stand alone from affordable.

It will be a plug and play thing(once you give them the programing info) allowing you to keep the rest of the 86 trucks harness intact. Call them to talk about controlling the transmission with the ecm. Use there ecm and calibrated chip. It is around $500 for engine only control. I never used there harness/ecm to control a automatic yet so contact them.

The basic answer is just don't use the factory TBI or the 4lL60E neither are all that good, they bring a lot of complicated wiring because their primary purpose is to meet emission and fuel mileage standards. As a result the factory system is difficult and expensive to modify as that was an intention to keep weekend hot rodders out of the system as a legal requirement. And I'm not even up to modifying a 2 wheel drive transmission to fit a 4 wheel drive transfer case.

First tackling the TBI in the end fitting this thing can be done without using a 4L60E you can use your 700R4 it will run the TBI fine. But the TBI is designed into that engine any hop up changes immediately get you into custom program changes which still today are a cut and try process, so basically just mail your VISA card to the programmer then test the result to see if you can live with it. If not mail the chip and your VISA card back and wait for the next result. The simpler method and about cost ahead is just go to a self learning aftermarket TBI. These constantly read the AFR and adjust, if you make big changes to the engine, you just put in a new close baseline and let the system dial it in.

Next the transmission, if the 700R4 is functional and especially if already built for off road then the engine is just a bolt up, excepting you may need a new flexplate for the one piece seal crankshaft of the 94 motor. As far as the Camaro 4L60E the conversion to a 4x4 is possible, but you'll have it all apart and will get into systems as everything changed in 1987 and again in 93, not to mention 96 and on, it just gets messy, and messier as time goes on.
