53 Pontiac Cheiftain Special steering fitment

HELP I'm starting a 53 Pontiac Cheiftain Special "tin woody" wagon I intend to use the Pontiac V8 I already have with a 2004r behind it...go figure there are some fitment issues ....the big one is a steering box where an exhaust manifold is soooooooo what rack may work(originally it was a straight 8 and hydromatic...long nose )so it needs to be on the back side of the cross member

Jay, you're getting into front suspension and steering geometry, which will require some education. Pick up a copy of Carroll Smith's book "Tune to Win" and a copy of "Doorslammers, The Chassis Book" by Dave Morgan.

Welcome to Hotrodders. I edited the thread title. We do not use "Help" as a thread title here.

Please place some info in the title so the membership has an idea of your questions

Like Tech alluded to, there is NO rack that "may" work. Steering and suspension geometry go hand in hand. Your old suspension is designed around that recirc ball box that is in the way.
Without a complete suspension redesign to retain the Akerman, bump, self centering and turning radius you will never get a rack to work correctly and be a comfortable driver.
With that said this is why many of these old cars get clipped in the front with an F or X body front subframe. Using a Camaro or Firebird sub gets you the width you need to stuff that Pontiac motor in there to clear the box plus the better steering geometry and suspension that comes with it.
May be the better way to go.
