'56 Chevy, jammed hood, any ideas/insight?

Just picked up a '56 Chevy 210 wagon. It has billet grille with VERY narrow spaces between the bars. The previous owner used a paint stick to open the hood. That is not working and I can't get in there to see what is holding the hood shut. Any ideas or "been there, done that" solutions?
Thanks
Mark

usually the latch is down too far, try to push the hood down as you try the paint stick
and then move the latch up a bit to make it easier to unlatch

Thanks Ogre,
We got it... The hood hinges are pretty much junk and they are letting the hood come to far forward when it is closing. I lifted the front edge of the hood while my wife worked the back corners up. That freed up the latch and the hood popped open. After it was opened I moved the latch rearward about a half inch and now it works great!
