78 GMC tailgate in an 85(?) box?

I have a box off of what I think is an '85 chevy truck that I'm using as a replacement on my 1978 GMC. Will the tailgate from my '78 fit in the new box? I've heard there are differences but will these affect it. I will be using the latches and hinges from the '78. Thanks in advance for any advice.

all you need are the lower hinges on the box to match your tailgate.

the later trucks used the hinges with smaller circles than the older ones.

your 78 gate will most likely go on the later box without changing them, but will rattle like crazy with the lower part of the gate swinging all the time..

I have an 81 gate for my 79----all I changed was the lower hinges to match the 81 gate

I used a 75 tailgate on my 85 bed. I had to slot out the bars to get the tailgate down low enough. Just make sure you have parts from both tailgates to make it work.
