8.5 10 Bolt Chevy Info Needed

i have an 1976 posi 8.5 10 bolt chevy rearend that came factory with 3.42 gears
recently purchased a set of 4.88 gears . will i need a ring gear spacer
for this swap . thanks steve

Ring gear spacers are a crutch, if you can afford to do it right then do so.

There is only 1 carrier break for the 8.5" and most people never have to worry about it. It is:
8.5" 2.56 & down / 2.76 & up
You do not have to change your carrier.

Some "smog era" cars had stuff like 2.08's in them

Like I said most people don't have to worry about it because most vehicles (especially from the hot rod era) had lower gears in them like 3.08, 3.42, 3.73, etc.

My friends 78 Formula had 2.41's and a posi. It shifted out of first gear around 60 lol.

my 77 Cutlass S 2dr 403cid has a 10 bolt with 2.41s at WOT it shifts into drive at 90+ speedo ends at 85mph
