A lot of detail can be found here: https://therangerstation.com/tech_li...8_8-axle.shtml There are also some youtube.com videos on what you want to do.

I think the short Explorer axle is the shortest that you will find. You might check the right side of a E150 van, but I doubt that it will be any shorter.

The Rangers had shorter axles. 2 short side axles should get you pretty narrow. I looked into this several years ago, but wound up going with custom axles to get the width I needed. Rangers came with both 28 and 31 spline axles.

Here you go:

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/m...ng-p/overview/

Listed as fitting 94-97 Rangers on the passenger side. 27.250" long. That's the shortest I could find listed as a stock replacement axle with a 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern. Two of these should get you a little over 55" from outside to outside on the wheel hubs on an Explorer. The center section will be centered in the car, but the pinion will be offset slightly.

Yeah, I forgot about the Ranger having the 8.8. I think the left side axle is the same length as a FOX body Mustang and the right axle is shorter.
