Battery shorting

Hooking up battery for the first time in a year and the negative cable arced bad and positive instantly got hot. I checked the starter wiring to be sure it wasn't grounding. Could a bad alternator cause this? All the wiring looks good and the car is gutted, so nothing is hooked up.

Got it figured out. The power wire was grounding out on the alternator.
