changing floorshift to column shift ...

Hello everybody,

New to the forum ... even new to the hotrodders world ...
I'm looking to buy a '56 Chevy stepside pickup truck. Looks like over the year it has gotten an upgrade, as there is a 350 engine, (I think) TH350 gearbox and a 12-bolt rearend.
Looking at the steering column, the truck originally had a column shifter. But now with the new drivetrain, they've put in a floorshifter (stick).

Do you think it is possible to change back to a column shifter ? and where are these parts for sale ? I checked some online stores but besides the knob, I don't find anything ...

Many thanks,

If you do find an original auto column, it will be for a 2 speed trans....Can be made to work, but I think I would order an aftermarket column from Ididit or one of those companies.
I wonder if common sense will ever make a comeback?

IF the truck came with an auto trans originally, it would have been a Powerglide (2-speed auto), OR the OPTIONAL Hydramatic (dual range, 4-speed auto). It should be no big deal to get an original, auto trans, column shifter to work with the TH350 trans; the detents on the column will have to be changed as well as the shift indicator. IF it was originally a 3-speed manual shift on the column, it too can be made to work, but you'd only have the detents IN the trans to lock each gear in range. I saw a 56 Chev Sedan Delivery years ago that had a 396 BBC and TH400 trans, and they used the stock, column shifter, 3-speed linkage. It was functional, but that's about all.

Usually just the shift lever is removed, along w/the linkage from the bottom of the column to the tranny.

If you find a single arm at the bottom of the column, it was for an AT. If there are two arms it was for a three speed manual trans. The manual tranny was far more common.
