I took a engine machining class and was the only one building a 283 because I was given the engine. The cost for parts for a 350 is far less than for a 283. The machine work is all similar. I haven't fired up the 283 yet but I believe it will be a pretty high reving torquy little engine. It has reworked power pack heads with some porting. I am trying to sell it but have had no offers. I had a rebuilt 283 bored to 292 in a 64 GTO when I was a kid and it was pretty fast and got 18 mpg with Qjet. It had a mild cam and was blueprinted and balanced. It was set up to race. I which I still had it.

If I were you I would either get a running 350 or spend your time and money rebuilding a 350. The 283 although a nice engine will cost more and will not develop the hp you need.

Summit sells a set of 2.02 heads with 54 CC chambers(Im not 100% sure they are 54 cc).You can make a 283 go but any other engine would be a lot cheaper.

Hey Vinnie, I don't think those 2.02s will fit on the 283.

I have a niche market for 283's, I ll take all I can get for the right price, Where you at?

youd be better off and have more money in your pocket if you just find a running 283 they go for about 4-500$ complete check craigslist ive seen 383's with low end parts going for 2500$ but good machine work pistons crank rods ect is going to cost you more dont waist your time with that 283 youll want more later

As a guy that runs a 283, I'll say buy a 350. Used is around $500, a 260HP GM crate long block is around $1400. Unless the vehicle originally came with a 283 and you want to keep it period correct (which the S10 didn't).

Don`t waste a 283 in s10, sell it to someone who appreciates it and get 305 or 350 to begin with.

You probably have seen an article in popular hot rodding or car craft magazine where they take a goodwrench 350 and say easy 450hp with 1000$, it`s not going to happen.

Your 1st post specifically asks what to expect for HP/torque,so,most of us were just informing you that what you were trying to do wasn't a good idea from a power or financial standpoint & offering suggestions to help make it work,or,offering you better alternatives. You asked for help & opinions on your build & that's what everybody was trying to help you with.We weren't advising you on how to make the most HP.We were giving you opinions & different alternatives to the idea that you had explaining why it would or wouldn't work.

283 wont accept 2.02 valves. The bore is too small to go over 1.94 valves.
