I know you want to build that 283 but honestly you would be a lot happier with a 350 small block. Heck I would put in a 305 before a 283. I got two s10's and they are both performance and are very fun to drive and my wiled one has around 450 hp give or take a little and I just did a nice easy drive and got 19 mpg from my tune. You could probably get better of course with yours but it won't be as good as you would like. Trust me I have done I want this and I want that for my truck and was never happy. Till after a point I took a lot of advice from the pros on here and made it all match and I could not be happier with my rides.

Eric is rite.The more I think about it,the more I think you may be spendin alotta money & time only to end up disappointed,even if just a temporary fix.Somewhere out there tonite is somebody searchin craigslist,ebay,etc for a 67 283 for an era specific build & would be glad to take that 1 off your hands & prolly @ a fair price.You could get you a later model L30 or L31 roller cam engine for less than your gonna end up with on this 283 venture & have a lot better,powerful,fuel efficient,durable ride.However'if you're deadset on this 283,I'll do what I can to try to help you.It's your ride,your money,& your time.

the reasons most people here dont use a 283 is;

1)most people are doing a cheap to very cheap build, 350 the cheapest,,,
2) some people are looking for the magical "stroker" engine,so they build a very very cheap 383,
3) easiest and cheapest all inclusive kits are for 350/383
4) buying after marker cylinder heads is a stylish thing to do,most cheap heads fit 350/383 applications,
5) lots of builders can build a 350/383 that sounds bad and performs at least fairly well using cams with cool names,

I think you should decide what you want your car to do and how well,,,then pick an engine that will give the performance and style that appeals to you.
simple math for you;
if the high performance engines here mostly make about 1.1 horse power per cubic inch,,,do you want a 300 hp 283 or a 550 horse power 496 or something in between?

From what I can understand,he just wants to put the 283 in the truck & have it run.I think he also wants to try to use parts,heads,intake,etc from oparts he has onhand if possible.I don't think he has a specific HP #,or,any particular performance goals for the truck other than havin it run decent with the 283.Not real clear on exactly what he wants'or'expects from this other than havin a running 283 in his S10.

What ever route you go please don't make the mistake like I did many years ago and that is put a bunch of stuff together and not have matching parts that go with each other. It will leave you unhappy and many dollars in the hole. Trust me I have been there and I learned the lesson's the hard way. I now have two running trucks with two great motors and I can drive them and am happy with how they perform and run. Remember to keep it simple.
