Chevy truck : caddy engine swap???

Hey y'all, I seen squarebody Chevy trucks with caddy big blocks before. Anybody ever done it?

Saw one done in Florida years ago BIG K10 BRIGHT ORANGE

dude use a BOP T 400,
Bolted it all in. The thing was a beast. It got slightly better mileage than the anemic 350 SBC that was in it , but had a HUGE amount of torque compared to the SBC .It was a win/win

He was pullin 44s and it would fly down the interstate
Very formidable off road performance also.

Yea the one I got still bolted to the original th400, I know is have to get a driveshaft made, but was just thinking mounts and steering clearance. Friend told me stock mounts will work but wasn't sure

Think I'm just gonna go for it.
Got all the caddy stuff in the yard and 350s ain't as cheap as they used to be. I got more time than money right now so what the hell, I'll give it a shot
I've done crazier stuff 😉😉😉

Cad500.com the guys in Albuquerque have what you need in mounts and you can get some nice shorty headers off of ebay.. Yeah its been done and makes a beast for towing..

Yes it has been done plenty of times before. You don't need to use 472 or 500 headers you can easily find ways others have taken 454 headers and modified them to fit onto the 472/500 heads.

The thing about a 472 or 500 is that you need to respect that it is a torque engine not a horsepower engine. You want to gear the thing so that the engine stays below 4000 rpm when in stock form. I had a 74 500 mated to a sm465 with 3.08 gearing and a 205/203 double transfer case feeding a 60 front and 14 rear turning some 33's that worked out real nice. I used the stock 500 manifolds dumping into some 2.25 then flowmaster 40's. I made a 3/8 midplate which was the engine mount and the transmission adapter. Lakewood bell with a flywheel from Cad company and a truck clutch.

Was able to have the 1st for offroad basically just idling over anything.
2nd was for taking off on the street from 0-15mph
3rd was what I drove around in most of the time shifting into 4th around 45-60mph.
4th was simply for cruising the engine liked the 3.08 gearing and the torque allowed me to drive around in 3rd as long as I kept it above 15 and hold it all the way up to 60 in 3rd if I felt like moving the 6000lb pile a bit faster.

You should know about the timing chain. Need to go with a rear pan but you dont need to go with a high volume pump. I believe I went with a extra quart pan through cad company also. If you have points there are a few places that can recurve a distributior to allow you to have hei. If you have points you also might need the valves reworked. I have ran them without ever touching the valves in stock form. Depends if we are talking about a $400 engine or a $4000 engine.


With a automatic you once again need to respect that engine is not meant to rev above 4000. I would run a 2800 stall and choose a rear axle ratio so that your cruising rpm is around 2500 at your cruising speed. You may decide to go with a manual valve body 4l80e or use a stand alone controller such as Microsquirt to control it which will give you overdrive.

We are talking about a square body here though. I have always avoided the highway with the 8 I have owned enjoying just taking the back roads driving up to 60 and coasting till 50-55 before getting back on the throttle instead of being on the highway pushing a wall of air constantly on the throttle.


Before anyone says it. Yes you can build a 472 or 500 into a absolute beast that can scream rpm wise. MTS has done some amazing things if you have the budget. But I am assuming this is sitting in the car in stock form probably parked due to bad brake lines. The cost of upgrading everything to allow for those rpm in what sounds like a budget build has me advising you to gear it so that the engine stays lower in the rpm range.

Thanks alot for all the good info. Just really want to use it cause number 7 cyl in the 350 is bad and I already got the 425 sitting around in my way. It's complete, mid sump pan, still hooked to trans, from a 77 deville. If i do it, plan on ditching the tcase for the time being and getting a shaft for the th400.
Plan on using the engine in stock form as it's my daily and I got plenty of other projects to sink my paycheck into.
Just need it for transport.

I saw one in a '66 Impala wagon years ago, it was s stump puller and fast. I'd consider one down the road. Trucks have a ton of real estate under the hood too.
