Electric Power Steering Pump

I have a 1956 Studebaker Hawk resto-mod that has a Chevy 350 crate motor with AC. The style motor mounts used to clear the low hood, along with the AC compressor, prevent using a motor mounted mechanical power steering pump. I have been reading about electric hydraulic pumps at other forums using 2000-2005 Toyota MR2 Spider PS pumps (they have the reservoir and pump as one unit) with guys having great success. However, between the racing guys and people converting their gas cars to electric, prices for these used pumps are averaging $400 at salvage yards and on eBay with new ones at Toyota just shy of $1000! I found one hot-rodder online who used a Mini Cooper electric power steering pump but the wiring was not straightforward as the MR2. Does anyone know of another source for electric hydraulic steering pumps that wire up even somewhat straight forward and donít require a second mortgage?

Get rid of the hydraulics and just run electric power steering directly. Much less to worry about.

Mount the power steering pump on your inner fender. Mount a electric motor directly to your pulley. Need to make a sleeve and flange for the shaft to slide into. Then make a bracket so the electric motor is mounted right to the pump bracket.

Spins 2900 without load and around 2000 under load.


Retain stock lines, stock pump, 2 wire setup with a relay or two. Easy to mount and no need to mess around touching your steering column. Keeps a steady rpm so you can idle into that parking spot. Simple.

More fun things with this;
Have the ablity to have it shut off above X speed via gps switch or just run it on a switch to kill it manually or just let the thing run key on to key off. Don't want it on the inner fender. You run long enough lines and can mount the thing in many different spots.


Something I always think of when buying "kits" is if this thing dies where can I get parts. Been burned many times when parts disappear due to company going out or the big manufacture refusing to stock parts for a older model.

The electric motor listed can be to your door within 3 days and if your using a stock pump and lines that is a trip to the parts store or 3 days to your door.



Bam electric steering(conversion) for under $200. Under $100 if you have the stuff to make the brackets around the shop.
