Exterior heat insulation?...

In my 1981 Citroen CX, the exhaust muffler is right under the center console, and it heats up the interior pretty badly. I certainly do not want to remove the center console, it would be too much hassle (the heater box is in it, the heater control cables are between the 2 seats...), so I cannot install interior insulation.
So what can I use to insulate from the outside? That insulation would obviously be exposed to the weather, road dirt, maybe some grease/oil... The underbelly has the factory tar coating/rust protection, in very good condition still. And there is no real space to mount the muffler elsewhere either.
Thanks!

Perhaps you could use header wrap to cover the muffler & pipe in that area.

Thanks for these ideas.
I do not want to use header wrap because it tends to keep moisture in, and make the exhaust piece rust even faster. Same goes for something like a blanket kind of thing...
Crdnblu, I had kind of thought about a heat shield and would have never thought Amazon would have that! I will have to look into making one myself...

FlowMaster makes these in multiple sizes that might work for you, if you have the space, as they "stand-off" from the muffler:
