First Time Respray

GDay guys,

im from australia and have been spending a fair bit of time reading through this forum. I am currently in the process of prepping my holden commodore for a repsray in its current colour, alpine white. I will be using ppg products as i have good knowledge and easy access of their range. I will b using BC/CC system.
I have 4 new doors i will b fitting, as my current ones are shagged.
My question is, the doors i will b fitting are the same colour, however they they have a few small stone chips which go down to bare metal. Can i just scuff the doors with 600 wet, and apply a sealer e.g.DP48LF, then basecoats?

Do you have any pictures of your car?

If the paint on the newer doors is in good condition and mil thickness you don't want too much buildup you should be able to scuff them with 400 wet/dry and paint will hold nicely.

The chips will show - can you live with them? I've used a small amount of polyester based spot putty and "shcmucked" the chips then lightly sanded..

Its also best to shoot a sealer on the car to get everything to a solid color as the paint covers better.

Certainly, you can DP48LF (white epoxy primer) then base! You'll be good to go. As Ramobo stated, you'll need to address the chips. "Schmucked"(new word for me) the chips, I'm pretty sure means wipe a small bit of glaze with a blade? ...I think? But, that's what I'd do. I'd prefer to finish with 400, the sealer will easily fill 400 scratches(specially for white). And ' some people disagree, but, I like to let the sealer flash for about 45 min, then run over it real quick with some wet 800. It just usually makes for a slicker surface to base over.

As a matter of fact, that brings up a good debate question. Some people would argue that you must sand out the chips (feather them), down to metal, then prime the mess and block it out. I was taught that was the only way to do it right. But, the A.S.E.(Auto Standard of Excellence) certification test says that wiping spot putty in the chips and sanding it(schmucked) was the proper way to do the repair. That was the question I missed! I guess the manufacturers have convinced the world it won't shrink. And, I must admit it doesn't shrink as bad as it used to. Yah, I have to schmucked sometimes too.
