Ford 9" -vs- GM 10 Bolt (both free)

I'm pulling a car apart(77 T Bird) for a friend, and was thinking about pulling the rear end (appears to be a 9" (do the 8.8's look anything like a 9??)

I have a few projects I'm working on, one being an 82 Caprice Coupe w/SBC, I'd like to see 350+ HP out of my smallblock, but have plans to drop in something built a little faster within the next couple of years (maybe BBC, 383LT1, Vortec 350/383). The Caprice currently has a 7.5" 10 Bolt, I have an 8.5 10 bolt ready to be stripped and built, and was wondering if this 9" would be something to hold on to..

Also, I think I've seen upper trailing arm "mounts" sold for the Ford 9 to GM car swap. Anybody have a link?? Part#??

Thanks for any info....

If it is a 9" it has a drop out gear carrier. I believe an 8.8 is a later model Mustang rear that is built more like a Chevy 10 or 12 bolt with a cover on the rear. The way to confirm that it is a 9" and not an 8" is whether or not you can get a socket on the bottom gear carrier nut. If you can get a socket on it, it is an 8". If you have to remove the bottom nut with a wrench, it is a 9". I would bet that a '77 T-Bird would have a 9", being a full-size car.

Yeah, it has the drop out 3rd member. I just wasn't sure if 8.8's used the same style housing..

I'll torch it out and go from there.... Seems (in Jegs, Summit) thatmost or all 9s are close to, or almost the same.. Can anyone verify if there were different sized components, different splines, etc??

thanks for the reply Chris..

There is a 28 spline and a 31 spline rear..31 being the most desirable.there are some variance in housing ends as well..lots of upside on the 9 inch as to aftermarket..don't have the link for the Ford to Gm swap..Your choice as to either use the 9" or the 8.5 10 bolt in your car..

9" housings are keepers as they are in demand..
