On thin materials I put a washer on the back side to give the insert better grip. It sucks when they spin instead of tighten up.

yep, that happened to me. I realized I couldn't spin the whole tool around to keep it tight so I had to use the knob, but when using the knob it closes the grips. So I stopped when it wouldn't allow anymore movement. Put on the flag and it spun. So what I did was put it back in there and loosened the other knob so it would touch the riv-nut. Not sure if you're supposed to do that but it worked great. I've heard a lot of first time users of this tool get excited to find what else they can use it for and I feel the same way. Awesome tool.
